In Floresville roses brighten the town and a Clean-Up Campaign spurs pride. The author urges continued beautification and notes a persistent housing shortage with five families turned away for lack of rent houses. A housing development for low income families is requested to attract new residents and support local business.
Poth High School announces a baccalaureate service for the 1964 graduating class on May 17 at 8:00 P M in the school auditorium with Dr Otto R Schawe delivering the sermon Graduates will also participate in exercises on May 21 at 8:00 P M in the auditorium The program features Dr Robert W Watts of Southwest Texas State College as speaker Watts has a distinguished literary background and is noted for Elizabethan and American literature research Also honored is Uncle Fritz Teltschik with Floresville bands presenting his final concert at Wiley Seale Auditorium on May 15 at 8 P M free and open to the public
The Floresville Elementary School suffered an unlawful entry sometime Monday night or Tuesday morning with a screen removed and windows forced. No money was reported taken. Sheriff’s office classifies it as burglary and warns of increased patrols. Also noted are Texas state park visitation figures for 1962 63 and a long obituary for J A Griffith 83 detailing his life from Floresville to San Antonio and back, with family survivors listed.
Jim Sells of Kosciusko Texas earns the DeKalb Agricultural Accomplishment Award for outstanding senior in vocational agriculture. He excelled in scholarship leadership and farm program activities at Poth High School. Son of Aaron Sells he plans to attend San Antonio College and later A&I.
Texas A and M University lists 923 degree candidates for May conferral after Gov Connally address. Among them 759 pursuing bachelor degrees, 132 working on master’s, and 39 seeking Doctor of Philosophy, with Jack B Orts among those slated to graduate.
Wilson County voters approved a 200000 bond issue for Road District 3 on Friday with 683 yes to 273 no, 137 more than the required 21 majority. The funds cover 160000 for right of way to widen Highway 181 to four lanes from the Bexar County line to Floresville and 40000 for resurfacing and rebuilding old Highway 16 from 181 northwest to Saspamoco.
Stockdale High placed in multiple events at the State Track Meet in Austin last weekend. Jimmy Chand earned a 156.6 dash mark, Tommy Luker was runner up in the 440 yard dash, Booker Schol led Stockdale to a second in the mile relay with a time of 3 23.90, and the team captured a second in the 93 26.5 event amid strong statewide competition.
Barbara Jean Vincik of San Antonio daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe Vincik of Floresville won a trophy for first place in a speech contest. She is employed by San Antonio Savings and Loan Association Chapter No. %. The contest was sponsored statewide by the American Savings and Loan Institute. Vincik will compete in a state final at Tyler Texas on May 18 with six other contestants. Floresville High School lists senior honor students led by Pred Lee Dip pel Jr as valedictorian James Lee Millikin as salutatorian. The Baccalaureate service is Sunday May 24 at Wiley Seale Auditorium and the commencement is Wednesday May 27 at the same venue with diploma presentation and awards including teachers service honors.
Harmony prevailed as Wilson County Democrats gathered at the courthouse Saturday afternoon to honor Governor John O. Connally. Fifteen precincts were represented, with Jonn Wheeler presiding and Clark Murray elected as permanent chairman. Delegates and officers were chosen, resolutions backed Connally and LBJ, and a Texas delegation pledge to Atlantic City was approved.
Memorial Hospital Auxiliary meets May 18 at 2 00 PM in the Hospital Dining Room. The Sutherland Springs 4H Club gathers May 19 at 7 30 PM in Sutherland Springs Community.
Guada Cama District of Boy Scouts of America offers a training course at Floresville High School on Saturday May 16 starting at 1 00 PM. The program covers Cub Scout Boy Scout and Explorer Leaders with three basic sessions. Trainers from New Braunfels Seguin and nearby counties lead Cub and Scout sessions, inviting all scout families to attend.
