The Gold Room of the Sam Fore Jr Library buzzed with excitement as the Peanut Festival board and the eleven queen candidates prepared for the queen selection on Tuesday evening April 29 1980.
Wilson County 4 H Clubs sponsor a chili cook off at the Wilson County Showbarn east of Floresville on May 18, 1980 at 12:00 noon. The event features trophies for top recipes and a finals chance, plus booths, games, a dunking machine, auction at 2:00 PM, fish pond, face painting, darts, milk bottles, cake walk and more activities for families and 4 H members ages 9 to 18. The Wilson County Arts and Crafts League annual show runs Friday from nine a.m. to later. A community bike-a-thon on Sunday May 18 supports cystic fibrosis with registration at 1:00 p.m. at the Catholic Church parking lot and sponsor sheets required for all riders under 18. Cash and prizes are offered for most miles, most money, and most sponsors, with donations from local businesses and a watch prize from Flores Drug Store.
Roughly 5000 voters turned out in Wilson County for the Democratic primary while about 10 000 registered voters existed. Several races show competitiveness and potential runoffs with Flores and Talamantez set for a runoff in Precinct No 3 Flores led the precinct sheriff race with Baumann and Witten trailing. Congressional and district contests hint at further action once ballots are canvassed.
The four incumbents Arin Cooper Joe F Ximinez Alois Lyssy and Charles Ur were re elected. Four write-in candidates also ran in the election.
Wilson County officers found Linda Wood a 29 year old Poth resident dead in a trailer Friday morning. The scene showed a fatal beating with her body face down. Autopsy by Dr. Ruben Santos concluded homicide. Investigators questioned several persons but no arrests. the case remains active.
