The Fabrics and Fashions Shop beside Johnson's Barber Shop will hold a grand opening May 7 to 9. Free coffee and cake will be offered each day, with four door prizes and sale items throughout the event.
At a May meeting the Floresville Volunteer Fire Department unanimously voted to support the City’s Garbage Pick-Up Program. The motion urged all citizens to back the program, noting most grass fires arise from burning trash. The department warned that property damage or loss of life from negligent burning far outweighs the small pick-up charge.
Courtney Kay Mayes was entered in the Miss Pirate Queen contest during Buccaneer Days in Corpus Christi on May 2. She received the Miss Congeniality Award and a trophy, marking her second such honor after a prior Miss Texas Peanut Queen pageant. Also noted is Achievement Day set for May 13 at Am Legion Hall Floresville, with a World Around theme featuring Japan, China, England, Germany, Mexico, and Early American displays.
A fire Monday morning caused extensive damage at Smokey's Ice House. A large freezer unit and a cigarette machine were destroyed, plastic caps melted, and interior smoke damage reported. The cause is under investigation, with the Volunteer Fire Department extinguishing the blaze quickly. No damage estimate available at press time.
Refugio Texas Delbert Cox has been selected for inclusion in the 1970 edition of Outstanding Young Men of America Nomination came from the Refugio Jaycees The publication honors U S leaders aged 21 to 35 with a biographical compilation sponsored by the Outstanding Americans Foundation Jerry Putman and Doug Blankenship spoke on the program and its civic purpose The 1970 edition is the sixth annual release with approximately 5000 men profiled Delbert is the son of Mr and Mrs W D Cox of Floresville married to Shirley Bump of Southton They have one daughter Kerri born about three years ago
Miss Courtney Kay Mayes Queen Tunaep XXV rode Floresville Peanut Festival float in Corpus Christi Bucaneer Days night parade on May 2. She wore coronation robes. gown crown and scepter by Farrel C. Tyson and her mother, Mrs. John H. Mayes Jr. The ensemble honored the 25th Floresville Peanut Festival Coronation with a silver and pearl design. Attending were Princess Beverly Baumann and Duchesses Stephanie Braddock Nancy Bruce Cheryl Donaho Patricia Riley.
Floresville's Peanut Festival float entered the Flambeau Parade on April 25 and earned third place, with Queen Turnep XXV Miss Courtney Mayes and several duchesses riding. On May 1 the Kenedy Gear Festival featured Beverly Baumann atop the float with duchesses Braddock Bruce Donaho and Riley. Attendees included Mayes and Eschenburg families, and others from Floresville and Kenedy.
Kris Hilton is named duchess of the week by Floresville High School and elected by peers as most attractive girl. She serves on the student council and has two years experience with candystripers at Memorial Hospital. She expresses happiness about being chosen by the Peanuts Festival Association and looks forward to duties and community service.
The Vinyard Funeral Home in Poth Texas completed renovations and will host an Open House on Saturday May 16. A formal announcement will appear in next week’s issue of the paper.
Baylor University physics faculty announce junior science student John Charles Polasek has been accepted into the National Science Foundation Precollege Student Science Training Program in Experimental Physics for eight weeks from June 3 to July 26, 1970, with praise for his high school work and a note of a profitable experience ahead. The Floresville Lions Club lists officers to be installed in May with a slate for board terms and nominating Lions appointed.
Kerrville area schools report 93 Schreiner students earned honor roll or honorable mention in the fifth six weeks. The college and preparatory programs show 31 students with 3.6 A averages and 62 with 3.0 B marks. Richard Ray Kota is listed among college honorees.
The Floresville Musical Club will hold its meeting on Tuesday May 12 at 2 p.m. Mrs Rose Westmoreland will preside and discuss club activities and plans for the season.
The mobile blood unit will be in Floresville Thursday May 14. Administrators thank volunteers for meeting blood demands and invite Pascual Ortiz Jr.s friends to donate at that time. More information will appear in next weeks issue.
Ross Poth of the Poth Pirates struck out 14 in a row and 19 total while throwing a two-hitter in a 21-0 rout of Pettus. The District 31-A triumph moves Poth to a 143 season record and guarantees at least a share of the league title.
The 1970 floats for the Stockdale Jubilee were remade for the San Antonio Parade. The South Fair Float with Debbie Tewes and Kay Reams placed third, while the Jubilee Float featuring 1969 Queen Alene Lynn took second. Credits go to Dan Trevino, Gene Tewes, Eugene Gusman, and others for many hours of work.
On April 29 1970 Texas Teachers Of Tomorrow elected officers for the next school year. President Eunice Toscano vice president Sylvia Weaver secretary treasurer Diane Cox reporter historian Jeanette Mutz. Sophomores were invited to join and dues were set at one dollar for new members and fifty cents for old members. Judy Koenig introduced sponsor Mrs Hill who received a daisy pin and matching earrings as thanks.
Youth Riders activities are cancelled until further notice as Voigt Arena remains closed to the public. No resumption date is announced and organizers urge members to monitor official updates.
A social security representative named Krahi will be in Floresville at the Communis location to assist residents with benefits and enrollment questions. The outreach aims to help attendees understand eligibility and required documents.
Unofficial returns for the Democratic Party from the First Primary held on Saturday May 2nd. The notes indicate early tallies and provisional counts across local districts pending official certification. Named counties or candidates are not specified in readable fragments.
Senator Wayne Connally won re nomination for another term representing the 21st District by a two to one margin. The ballot results show strong support for Connally among voters, reinforcing party leadership in the district.
