Lee McDaniel sworn in to take charge of the Floresville post office under new administration. He succeeds Wm. Reese who held the position for nearly thirty years. R M Kleberg recommends the new official for the office.
Postmaster General Farley officially names Lee McDaniel a Floresville postmaster under the Roosevelt administration. McDaniel, a Wilson County farmer, was sworn in and takes charge after weeks of notification via Congressman Kleberg. The change follows Wm. Reese’s service, with Judge Cox swapping duties during the district court week as civil cases proceed. A jury awarded $4,000 in a Texas & New Orleans case.
At a Floresville chamber of commerce meeting Paul Floresville, R T Irwin of Pandora was chosen president of the County Corn Hog Control Association along with C F Burney Floresville as vice president and A L Jones Floresville as secretary treasurer The Allotment Committee includes R T Irwin John Bednarz Path and Chas Bohmann Stockdale induce signers to inspect reduction contracts which will be tabulated and sent to the State Corn Hog Review Board for acceptance by the Secretary of Agriculture.
Mailings went to 766 Wilson County cotton producers to approve a 5.5 percent adjustment on average lint production under contract terms. Contracts cover 18,661 acres from a total 50,279 acres in cotton, with editor and Mrs. 8 D Chesnutt noted.
The Chronicle Journal notes County Superintendent J E Swift seeks re election in the upcoming Democratic primary on Saturday July 28. Swift has long served Wilson County schools since 1906 and is praised for his rural and town school leadership, building programs, state aid securing, and ongoing effort to improve public education in the county.
A fragmented note describes a Saturday event in the Colored Colony involving Pioneer Flour Mills of San Antonio hosting a cake cooking contest. Mary from Antonio led a team or session, with unclear details about a number or prize.
At the school’s April 27 event a short program featured a speech by former school board president Frank Robles praising faculty Mothers' Club and pupils. A large Wilson County Fairgrounds picnic followed with about 220 enrolled pupils and 200 in daily attendance. Faculty listed include L. B. Wiseman, Toscano, Ximenes, Robles, Garza. trustees Pacheco Trevino Oraz. Mothers' Club officers are Bridget de la Zerda, Juanita Garza, Ximenes, Toscano. The club presented $1 to each pupil, marking cooperative spirit.
J H Poth known as Jacob Poth son of A H Poth of the town announces candidacy for Justice of the Peace Precinct 8 in the Chronicle Journal He was appointed last year by the commissioners court his first year in office received approval born in Wilson county a Floresville High School graduate 1921 earned B S from Texas A and M in 1925 and has worked with his father in business and with County Commissioner Walter R Voges in road construction He asks voters to consider his candidacy and support.
Mr and Mrs Gordon Ridout of Marfa died within 48 hours of each other shocking Floresville and Wilson county friends. Mrs Billa Clark Ridout, 81, died early Saturday after months of illness and was laid to rest Sunday. Husband Gordon Ridout died about noon Monday and was buried in the same area.
A senior class play was presented last Friday evening by students at the local school. The event showcased their acting and staging talents with a short lineup of scenes and musical interludes.
The high school presented a three act comedy drama on Friday night April 27 at the school. Elizabeth Marek as Sally Lou starred with Verna Butler Dot Reynolds and Evelyn Fore as the leading trio. Cast members including Robert Spruce William McDonald and Evelyn Creech delivered witty lines and polished performances in the living room setting of Mrs Reynolds.
Floresville friends mourn the death of Helen Draeger daughter of George and Mrs. Draeger of Seguin. A trained nurse of four years she died at home after two years of ill health. Interment was at San Geronimo Cemetery Seguin conducted by Rev L J Rhode. Surviving are her parents two sisters Mrs A B Baker and Elinor Draeger and two brothers George Jr and Vernon Draeger. The Chronicle Journal extends sympathy.
Ehlers Community Club staged The Rose Of El Monte a wild Western comedy at Ehlers school on April 30. The patio setting of the El Monte ranch near the Mexican border framed the action where Colonel Dumbarton battles Miller Boone, a scheming nephew, until the ranch foreman exposes him as an outlaw and saves the ranch and its money.
Cubs defeated Ploresville by shutout in a Sunday game. Saspameo reported the Cubs’ strong defense and timely hits as key factors sealing the win.
Texas district Senator E J Blackert visited Floresville area amid rising onion shipments. Poth shipped about 80 carloads of Bermuda onions to date with a strong outlook for around 250 carloads for the season. Rain hindered progress but quality remains high and several buyers and Roy Campbell firm have offices in region.
Supt S P Conn announced Floresville High School class of 34 honors with Evelyn Fore valedictorian and Elizabeth Marek salutatorian. William McDonald had top boys average. Baccalaureate May 20 and commencement May 21 at 8 00 pm with E W Seale of A and I College speaker.
The Floresville Musical Club meets at president Mrs. J. C. Houston’s home next Tuesday May 8 with a 2:30 PM sharp business meeting and annual officers election. The regular program begins 3:00 PM to accommodate visiting musicians from San Marcos. a large attendance is urged.
The American Legion Post No. 38 in Wilson county held its regular meeting on Tuesday May 1 at 8 pm. Commander E W Franklin opened the session and introduced Senator E J Blackett who praised the Legion and its commander. State Service Officer E B Kuehne of San Antonio spoke on veterans legislation and day to day work in the Veterans Bureau Office. He urged that veterans continue to serve their buddies and country. At meeting’s end Franklin awarded Rabbit-Twister buttons to Sewell Schultz Alex Lieberman and Mrs Schultz and Mrs
L A Martin and his wife were found in a feeble state after a collapse incident. Neighbors reported hearing a loud crash and notified authorities who arrived to assist. Fire crews secured the scene as paramedics tended to the couple. condition details were not immediately released.
