Devine Texas April 29 1918 Sam Fore Jr Floresville Texas writes as former Wilson County Citizen to be postmaster of Devine noting he will take charge soon and remain reader of Floresville Chronicle Journal while busy in new role.
Floresville cemetery group invites all members and Mrs. Sam Fore Jr. to meet Friday May 10. Lavernia reports three more patriots, Ernest Koepp, Joseph Osuub, and Henry Harmuth, have answered the nation’s call and left for service. Lavernia school notes half a day for War Savings Stamps drive with $100 in stamps purchased.
A long list of individuals and groups associated with the Third Liberty Bond issue is noted, with closing date set for tomorrow night May 4. The roster includes residents and members connected to local clubs, lodges, and organizations, reflecting community participation and support for the bond drive.
Reverend Sid Williams reports a successful meeting despite recent bad weather. Pastor A. F. Bed Doe leads a fine choir with assistance from Rev. I. J. White of the San Antonio Baptist Association. Services are daily at 10 AM and 8:45 PM with cordial invitations.
Mrs P H Metzger died at her home yesterday afternoon after a long illness. The remains will be buried in Floresville cemetery this afternoon. An obituary will appear later.
The grand jury adjourned after returning five bills. A theft of hogs case resulted in a four year suspended sentence. Roberto Silas et al face murder trial May 7. W M Custer is set for incest case on May 9.
In Stockdale Texas on April 25 C W Lehmberg county demonstrator of the animal husbandry department and tied to Washington and the Agricultural and Mechanical College spoke at the bank. They urged pig and baby beef production and organized a boys club with broad support from local farmers and townspeople pledging help.
A major rain event last Monday brought two inches to Wilson County with hail and wind. Affected areas reported severe cotton losses totaling about 300 acres on Wiseman farms and Mead ranch, plus 60 acres on Tipton land and 150 on Spruce properties. Corn damaged. two horses and a mule killed by lightning near the river. Despite damage, the rain improves the season and prospects look favorable.
In Washington on May 1, officials plan to reveal manpower drafts as about 300000 men are slated for the month. Baker appears before Congress to disclose draft plans and the next quota is anticipated to be announced soon, signaling ongoing mobilization efforts.
In Floresville last Friday a Liberty Day rally featured Senator Carlos Bee of San Antonio delivering a strong Liberty Loan address. Four Wilson County winners spoke as part of the program and a total of 12,450 in bonds were sold at the courthouse.
