Floresville FFA Banquet Honors Members and Guests
Floresville Future Farmers of America held their annual banquet at the high school cafeteria with about 100 attendees. Walter Cardwell spoke and life memberships were awarded to local citizens for support of the FFA program. Certificates of merit were presented to several members, with District leaders and guests in attendance. A Wilson Karnes County induction list was released for April 1953, detailing numerous local youths called for service.

Poth Band Competes In Nixon Band Festival May 8
Poth High School Band will compete in the Nixon Band Festival Marching Contest on May 8 at 3 p.m. Southwest Texas bands join a parade with civic clubs and floats. Barbecue chicken and treats follow the parade, plus bingo and entertainment ending with a dance at Nixon Lions Club building. Music by Billy Jacobs and His Orchestra. $1.00 per person. Television award at 9 p.m.

Final Floresville School Band Year End Concert Benefit
The Floresville School Band held a year end concert benefiting the Floresville Band Boosters. Directors and staff led a varied program including marches, solos, and stage pantomimes with performances by Coronets, Trombones, Clarinets, Saxophones, Flutes, Drums, and Horns. The program honored band members and thanked mothers and fathers for support.

Floresville contestants posted a strong showing at the San Marcos regional last Friday. Dianne Frick reached the finals but lost to last year’s state runner-up. Buddy Frick and Wynn Wright fell in the semifinals as A and M Consolidated High led the boys to state runner-up standing. Floresville seniors Berta Jean Blake and Elizabeth Gaydos exited in the first round to Rock.

Jo Carolyn Donaho was crowned Farm Bureau Queen before about 500 guests in a Thursday evening ceremony. The Floresville High School junior will represent Floresville at the Kenedy Piaks Festival. LB Ray of Floresville led the event as master of ceremonies amid direct musical numbers. Wilson County Farm Bureau notes a 1000-member group with J. L. Dennis as president and Mae Dickerson as executive secretary.

Former Kelly Worker Captive For Two Years
San Antonio born Army corporal John King, 28, of Company G, Fifth Regiment, 24th Division, freed by Chinese forces in Korea. His next of kin is aunt Louise King of Orlando, Florida, though he has sisters in San Antonio and brothers in Converse and Floresville. His parents are deceased. A sister, Mrs Blaszeyk, received a Defense Department tele scam note at 2 a.m. Saturday confirming his release after two years in captivity. Desiderio Guardado of Floresville and Lalo Guardado of Converse are two of his brothers.
