A wind and hail storm Thursday night caused considerable damage across a narrow strip of country from La Vernia to below Pandora. Three houses in Pandora were damaged and young crops suffered severe setbacks. More moisture is needed to aid recovery.
A damaging windstorm with hail and heavy rain swept Wilson county last Thursday night, damaging barns homes and crops from LaVernia to Pandora and Nixon. Farmers report heavy losses to tomato growers and garden produce while authorities note eight men jailed in Floresville tied to local chicken thefts, with rangers identifying a suspect linked to a prior stop near Falfurrias.
County meet postponed until April 8 due to road conditions and other matters. The Reds sites leadership and special membership committee decided to extend the drive to Wednesday April 8 to allow adding more members as sides had enlisted many but time under the city limits will allow a few more.
A new concrete sidewalk and curb are being laid in front of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the adjoining residence of Rev. Father P. P. Zarb. This improvement in the city enhances access to the church and priest’s home.
Floresville sent the largest local delegation on opening day as the Fifth District met in Beeville for a two day session. Twelve Floresville P T A members registered with many more attending yesterday. Beeville hosted about 150 delegates with civic and educational leaders taking part in the program. A Floresville yearbook and student posters were showcased, praised for art and educational themes.
The Texas House passed a bill to redraw the state into 21 congressional districts by a 113 to 16 vote. Representative Penrose Metcalfe led the measure which now goes to the Senate for potential changes before a conference committee. The plan places Wilson county in the Seventh District and lists several counties in the district.
The City Tailor Shop of Floresville adds a late model electrically operated washing and drying unit with solvent cleaning using filtered gasoline. The installation includes a two-tank system, a deodorizer cabinet, an electric fan for drying, a steel asbestos-lined cabinet, and two Hoffman steam presses powered by a natural gas boiler. Owners Marshall Henson and Frank Bolf, in business since 1915, run a modern plant praised as a worthy home industry offering real service.
Several Floresville residences were entered Sunday night with only Henry Teltschik reporting a stolen gold watch and new suit found in the yard. Other homes near the highway and railroad line showed no confirmed losses as officers investigated and no arrests were made.
Fathers Night observed with a befitting program honoring father love by the Parent-Teacher Association on March 19. Rev E Howard opened with prayer as students and groups performed readings and songs celebrating fathers and family bonds. A highlight was a medley of Southern songs by a mother’s quartet and a group of students delivering heartfelt tributes to fathers.
A local home talent play is staged at the auditorium this evening to raise funds for the library. Event is conducted under local auspices and aims to support library services and programs.
Floresville hosts a district meeting of the American Legion at Beeville on March 29 with State Commander Hal Brennan and guests. Officials discussed Southern Pacific service cuts between San Antonio and Kenedy, seeking approval to keep night service and add a telegraph messenger, with the Floresville Chamber voting to support the plan and present it to the Texas Railroad Commission.
Pupils of the Midway School under the direction of Principal Clare present a Negro minstrel show at Sunny Side Church tomorrow night. Admission 10 cents. 25 cents for 484? Everyone invited to attend a community program.
The Wilson County School Meet held in Floresville Friday and Saturday attracted a large crowd despite rain and wind. Ola Sol opened the event with a morning program at the high school auditorium, contests ran in multiple rooms, and a noon lunch was served by the PTA and Grammar School boys.
At the county school meet last week the Lodi Mexican School showcased pressed wild Texas flowers. It was the only exhibit of its kind, despite Interscholastic League support. Pupils and teachers gathered a wide variety, earning wide attention and praise.
