Pfc Clyde M Burkett son of Mr and Mrs H J Burkett Floresville was wounded in action in Germany Telegram from Washington March 2 reports slight back wound and hospital follow up. He has served a year and sisters and three brothers in service including Captain Homer Burkett in England and another Burkett in the Pacific. Neighbors and friends hope for his swift improvement.
The Women's Missionary Society met on March 19 at the church Merchant, discussing Things Which Make for Peace in Tomorrow's World. Devotional by Mrs. W. M. Holcombe, led by Mrs. Lewis R. Cocreham, with contributions from Mrs. Joe Jane Long and Mrs. Cocreham McVea. Prayer.
Wilson county has raised 5916.78 for the Red Cross War Fund, 1288.27 short of the 7200.00 quota. County Chairman W J Ellinghausen urges school districts to push to meet the quota, noting many districts have exceeded theirs and hoping to publish a county report next week to honor Wilson county soldiers.
On a Pacific island base, Marine Corporal Clifton W. Jackson and Army Sergeant Roy B. Jackson—sons of Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Jackson of Floresville Texas—reunited after three years apart. Clifton, a Cape Gloucester New Britain and Peleliu veteran, had last seen Roy when he enlisted in 1942. Roy, overseas six months, learned his brother’s Marine outfit was near.
A serious fire was prevented at the B. M. Myers residence when fumes from a bucket of gas lines used for hot water ignited in the kitchen. The fire was reported promptly, allowing the Fire Department to extinguish it before spreading, according to the reporter.
Zero Moore died after five years of ill health. Born July 22 1858 in Ontario, he moved to Sutherland Springs in 1911 from Osburn Kansas and farmed long. Religious rites were held at the family home with a large crowd. burial in Sutherland Springs. Survived by wife Bell Dawson Moote, three daughters, four sons, twelve grandchildren, nine great grandchildren.
A. E. Stadler of Route 1 learned his son Platoon Sgt. William S. Stadler sent him the Purple Heart for a shoulder wound received September 16 on an island in the European Theatre. Stadler, under treatment for months, plans to return to duty. He has three other sons in military service: Sgt. Clifton Stadler in Italy, S/Sgt. Coleman Stadler in Midway, and Pvt. Gerald G. Stadler in the Signal Corps in the Pacific.
Joe Terrell of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co San Antonio was the principal speaker at Floresville Lions Club regular meeting lunch last Thursday. He discussed the telephone company’s role in World War II and demonstrated wartime phones, marking the event as one of the club’s most engaging since its founding. S.W. Teas, Floresville Rural Telephone Co. local manager, chaired the program.
In a Kansas era appeal Wilson County households are asked to save used kitchen fats to aid war medicine and munitions. Officials say one tablespoon per home could fuel blood plasma production and help treat casualties, with proceeds supporting vaccines and treatments.
Major Vaner Smith formerly of Stockdale and brother of Mrs Ace Fuller Jr of Floresville has returned from 15 months overseas service. He visits his wife in New Braunfels and relatives in San Antonio and elsewhere. He earned the DFC Service Cross the Air Medal with oak leaf clusters and a Presidential Citation. He will report to Florida after his furlough expires.
The Methodist church board of stewards held their regular monthly business and social meeting in the church basement Tuesday evening with Dr. J. W. Oxford and John H. Myers as hosts. Ladies served a supper before the business session. Guests included E. V. Johnson, a member of the board, and Cc. E. Hart.
Near Camp Ranch, Deskin twins Allen and Alton marked seven with a Sunday party on March 18. Guests included Robert Ziegler, Mary Louise Ziegler, Armin Albert, Melva Lee Albert, Carl Orths, Dorothy Ann Pennartz, and many relatives. Fort Sam Houston attendees and servicemen were among those who joined the celebration.
The Three Oaks 4H Club girls met on Wednesday March 14 at the schoolhouse. The meeting was called to order by the leader and planned activities for the week.
