David Koenig, among over 1700 competitors, named to Class AA Second Team All State Basketball. Floresville’s top athlete earns high praise for dribbling, passing and two handed ball handling.
The Floresville Chamber of Commerce outlines a year of community projects from road building and future county welfare to youth programs, recreation centers, livestock show facilities, and county-wide reservoir concerns, emphasizing local service and courtesy on the highway. It also highlights David Koenig's standout athletic career at Floresville High, detailing his 63-22 record, 1359 points in 67 games, multiple All-District honors, leadership in football and basketball, and his parentage.
A 1954 Chevrolet driven by Guadalupe Sosa of Adkins failed to turn near the Leroy Schellhase place on Old Corpus Christi Highway. It struck a fence and a telephone pole, breaking it in half. Sosa had minor cuts. Connie Martinez was hospitalized with cuts. The crash occurred about 1:30 am Sunday, per trooper John Newding.
Residents of Sunnyside community east of Floresville are urged to attend a meeting at 2:00 p.m. Sunday March 21 at the old Sunnyside School House. The gathering aims to discuss rebuilding the school for a needed community meeting place and invites all neighbors to participate.
Two highway construction projects in Wilson County begin after a March 15 1965 pre construction meeting. Project C 650 24 extends along F M Highway 175 from 0.4 miles east of La Vernia to 0.3 miles south of Guadalupe County line. Project A 2761 1 1 runs along F M Highway 2772 from 1.1 miles northeast of La Vernia east to F M Highway 539. The combined length is 3.088 miles. Contractor Leo P Cloud Jr and Son of San Antonio Texas will construct the projects for 159 486 01. Work starts March 15 1965 and should finish by August 1965. Resident Engineer Gene H Koch Sr notes traffic will remain open but drivers should proceed cautiously due to heavy equipment.
The Floresville Junior Chamber of Commerce was formed March 9 1965 with a meeting at the High School Library. Officers elected include President Sam Strozier Vice-President Fred Barber and Sec Treas Joe Holcombe. Directors are Maurice Westmoreland Carl Eschenburg and others plus committees Youth and Sports Finance. Installation planned March 30 at Parish Hall with State President Jim Reese presenting charter. Public invited.
Patrolmen Darvin Hogg and Frederick Funke, of Nixon, visited Floresville on Monday for court matters. Hogg transferred from Seguin District and Funke recently completed DPS Academy at Austin. Hogg is single while Funke and his wife have two sons, Curtis Lee and Carl Derick.
Floresville Tiger Band won first division in ten events at the University Interscholastic League Solo and Ensemble contest held at South San Antonio High School on March 6. Seven solo events earned first division ratings. ensembles also posted top results with multiple 1st Division ratings across class I II and IV events. Notable honorees include Joe Reyes Margie Teltschik Jerry Teltschik Bobby Jaegli Sharon Baumann and Barbara Lawhon with several others listed among participants.
Poteet prepares for the 1965 Strawberry Festival with a pre festival Talent Show on Saturday March 20 at 7 30 p m at the Poteet Civic Center Don Cortiser of KONO Radio and Channel 12 Swingtime will emcee the event The series aims to entertain and select a winner for the festival activities
Wilson County producers are reminded that the final date to sign a 1965 Feed Grain Agreement is Friday March 26 1965. By March 12 651 farms had signed to divert 21 985 acres. The program is voluntary and combines corn grain sorghums and barley in a single base with diverted acreage payments price support payments and eligibility for price support loans. The maximum acreage diverted is 50 percent of the base or 25 acres whichever is larger, with adjustments for small bases.
W. E. Rippert reports the screwworm eradication program in danger of funds running out after June 30 1965. The drive seeks 300000 from Texas producers to match 550000 federal money, with 250000 already appropriated by the Texas Legislature. Farmers will pay 10 cents per head of cattle or horse and 2 cents per head of sheep goats or swine during March 29 to April 12.
Leroy Skloss wins Grand Champion with Hereford calf at Falls City Youth Fair on March 13. Reserve calf honors go to Gerald Sekula, hog grand champion to Jerome Morawietz, reserve to Wilfred Wintrek. Lamb and dairy divisions claim blue ribbons for Philip Swiere, Hank Toothman. Eddie Bordovsky earns showmanship prize. judges reward other division winners.
City Secretary E J Kosarek reports six candidates filed for alderman in Poth for the April 6 regular city election. Name order: Irvin W Jenkins Victor Stavinoha Gilbert Reinhard W H Woellert Reynaldo Alley and Walter Voges. Incumbents Woellert Reinhard Stavinoha seek re election. three others are new. Mayors Eckel Jr and two aldermen Fahrenthold Warnken hold over. Election at city hall 8 am to 7 pm.
A 21 year old Stockdale man accused of taking a Wilson County deputy sheriff’s car on March 11 was captured Friday morning sleeping in a San Antonio motel. George Arnett offered no resistance when deputies Rudy Rodriguez and Jimmy De Lesdernier arrested him in the 4400 block of S Presa. Arnett, wanted for parole violation in Louisiana, was returned to Wilson County after officers traced a tip and found the abandoned car earlier that day.
