Interscholastic League events are held today and tomorrow with many Wilson County schools participating. Floresville sends numerous contestants and patrons. Volleyball and tennis schedules have been changed.
Stockdale hosts the general County Meet on March 18 19 with events at Stockdale High School and campus venues including playground ball debates and declamations. Separate meets include a Path Volleyball Meet on March 26 and a Tennis Meet at Worth on April 2 with schedules spanning morning and afternoon sessions.
The Floresville Methodist Church will supply 12 or more cases of eggs for the Waco Orphanage. Eggs to be shipped from San Antonio, with a truck visiting Floresville next Tuesday morning. Surplus eggs collected will be stored at the Waco facility and distributed to the children. Citizens are urged to bring offerings to the church Tuesday morning.
Crippled for the Wilson County School Meet the Floresville track squad led by coach S. J. Irwin faces a handicap as Avant misses several days with illness and Morris Johnson undergoes an operation in San Antonio. The team relies on remaining runners for Saturday contests.
About twenty five men have applied for loans through the county committee to buy fertilizer and seed for the season. Loans within Secretary of Agriculture specs will be approved promptly. Stockdale committee meets daily at the Chamber of Commerce, while Floresville committee meets each afternoon at 4 to review applications. It is a business proposition, not charity, with repayment due by November 30, 1932.
In the Chronicle-Journal announcement column several Wilson County residents declare bids for Democratic primary to be held July 23. Ed Franklin seeks reelection as county treasurer, Dan Lay runs again for County Commissioner Precinct 3, and Robert F Orts of Path enters for County Commissioner Precinct 2. Each emphasizes local roots and service.
The home of Will Stanley and family in northwest Floresville near the E F Woolsey residence was totally destroyed by a Sunday night fire at 1130. Fire is believed to have started from a ceiling flue. Most household effects were lost. Firemen arrived promptly but the house was beyond saving. Loss partly covered by insurance.
A preliminary Texas report shows a ten day cold wave from March 4 to 14 caused heavy damage to tender vegetables and fruits. Lower Valley corn damaged about 70 percent with much killed or stunted. watermelons in South Texas wiped out. onions lightly damaged with harvest delays. North Texas plant loss around 40 percent. Acreage figures reflect pre freeze intentions and last year's totals.
Texas appeal records show the Tenth Court of Civil Appeals upheld a district ruling declaring the Texas cotton acreage reduction law unconstitutional. Judge W C Davis of Franklin rejected a state injunction against Fred L Smith of Calvert, limiting planting to 30 percent of 1981 cultivated land. County Attorney Tyson expected to take the case to the Texas Supreme Court.
Michigan visitors Mr and Mrs C D Hoxie and Mr and Mrs ACR May of Grand Rapids spent a night and part of Tuesday with Dr and Mrs FE R Shedden. They toured Beaumont Port Arthur Houston and San Antonio praising Texas vast resources climate and the historic Alamo City.
Hon. J. W. Stevenson of Victoria, state senator from the 18th district, was in Floresville yesterday afternoon en route to Jourdanton on business. He seeks re election to a second term and is currently president pro tem of the Senate. He plans an active district campaign later.
The Floresville Fire Department restricts driving the fire truck to active members and limits passengers to active firefighters unless requested by an active man. It notes citizen help is appreciated but emphasizes system and organization in response and that all equipment remains under direction.
STOCKDALE Texas March 16 W 5 Driskill who has been superintendent for three years has been reelected.
Gulf Refining Co warehouse near the railroad tracks was entered Tuesday night. About eight gallons of gasoline and three gallon oil cans were stolen, with other goods damaged. A car theft attempt occurred at R J Goesch’s nearby garage. the lock was broken but the thieves could not start the vehicle. Officers are investigating.
Texas farmers are slated to receive between 7 million and 15 million dollars through the Reconstruction Finance Corporation over the next sixty days, via the regional loan office covering Texas New Mexico and Arizona headed by Owen W Sherrill. Loans will support crop production and circulate through local trade centers, with county committees appointing sub-committees to assist farmers distant from hubs.
County Agent ER Beck appeals to Wilson County farmers to sow new pasture seeds this spring and fall. Korean lespedeza, black medic, carpet grass, and burr and yellow-clover seeds are distributed at cost. Seeds are to be scattered and lightly harrowed or ridden in by cattle, with support from Ultmann Flielder Grain Co. Floresville. About twenty men needed countywide to demonstrate the program over the next weeks.
Mrs John Shields of Austin spent Tuesday evening and Wednesday in the city with Aunt Jennie McDaniel and other relatives and friends.
Farmers in the Cuero area are diversifying into peanut planting this year. Alamo Lumber Co. of Cuero ordered 1,000 bushels of seed peanuts from J.T. Sheehy in this city. The nuts were shipped last week.
George J. Kempen a Seguin businessman and South Texas Fair Circuit secretary called on John H. Mayes Floresville Tuesday on fair business. He cites himself as the daddy of em all a long time figure in the fair game and claims the title for Guadalupe County Fair.
The commissioners court met in regular monthly session and handled routine business. A large delegation from Path and Surrounding community was present regarding a road matter in the town of Poth.
