The Floresville program for Friday March 25 1927 lists high schools and grammar schools competing together in volleyball debates senior and junior track and field. Four divisions Class A B grammar or ward schools plus a rural division for Three R contest and Pentathlon. Rural schools may enter track and field events and arithmetic. Three-R contest open to fifth sixth and seventh graders.
Collins, known as the truck man, is expanding his holdings with a new orchard along the highway a three quarters mile from town. He recently planted about 200 peach trees and mixed plums and berries, with about two acres in total and plans to add more next year. The note suggests the county’s potential to rise among South Texas producer counties thanks to soil and climate.
Clinton Brinkoeter defeats O C Donaho 63 62 and beats Charlton Lane 63 61 to reach the final. David Paulus defeats Sammy Lane 63 63 and advances to face Brinkoeter after semi finals. The finals will pit Brinkoeter against Paulus in a title match.
In Washington March, the Federal Land Bank of Houston reports a record 90 days with about $20 million in long term first mortgage loan applications for Texas farms. December set a monthly high of $4,022,400 across 1150 loans. Low 5 percent interest and cotton prices drive demand, while delinquencies stay under 0.33 percent.
Texas Governor Moody signed and filed House Bill No. increasing the gasoline tax from one to three cents per gallon up to September 4, 1928, after which two cents will be charged. The measure also authorizes cities to enact segregation ordinances for white and negro residential areas. Twenty four other bills were approved.
At a board meeting last week Prof A R Davis was re elected superintendent of Brackettville schools. The board and school patrons praised his work and expected a better and more successful term with Davis retaining support of teachers and confidence of patrons.
Wi Sepneiger of Schneider's Filling Station in Poth told the Chronicle Journal next week he will start enlarging the station. He will spend about $4,000 on improvements including a two story main building with an office and employee sleeping quarters on the top floor. The restaurant will be doubled in size and a well equipped tourist camp site will be added across the street from the station.
R. J. Goesch and his wife departed Wednesday for Shiner to spend several days visiting relatives.
Austin Texas March 14 With funds tight the State Highway Commission refused many county petitions for aid at its second meeting since taking office Chairman Sterling was detained in Houston and Johnson as pro tem warned delegations that counties must cooperate or risk redesignation of state highways. The panel indicated it will delay new road construction until gaps on major routes are fixed and existing roads are passable.
Louis Godley went to trial in Conr ad Court No 2 before Judge George C Clifton on charges of negligent homicide in a fatal July 5 accident on South Presa Street. Emmett Rowinsky Jr of Floresville was struck while beside his automobile.
Circle No 1 of the Methodist Missionary Society held an interesting meeting Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. J D Spruce with ten present. All enjoyed the Bible study. Next Monday a Voice program is planned and the ladies will meet with Mrs. John Wiseman at Mrs. Lola Canfield's home. Secretary.
Seguin Texas March 12 George J Kempen chairman of the racing committee of the South Texas Fair Circuit has called a special meeting of the committee to be held in San Antonio Sunday March 20 Rules and regulations for racing at the coming fairs will be drafted as well as the choosing of officials to preside at all races A full attendance of the committee is expected.
The Baptist Ladies W M A will meet next Monday afternoon March 1 at 4 p.m. with Mrs W M Chappell. AML members urged to attend. Mr and Mrs F B Seale and Mesdames Lee Matlock, J D McDaniel, C J Burney, Carl Johnson and wives noted in attendance.
In Stockdale Texas on March 13 declamation results list Virgil McMullin as first senior boy and Thomas Redding second. Johnnie Lang takes third while Orleana Fatheree and Jimmie Lou Smith tie for first senior girls. Lora Martin and Edith Teague tie for second, Jessie Stout is first junior boy with Jarriet Woods second and Manuel Teague third. Grammar grades see Willie Fatheree first with Bernice Fatheree second and Frances Denmark third. High school juniors yield Maymie Edwards first, Audrey Young second, Emma Fatheree third.
Baptist ladies from both circles will meet next Monday afternoon at Mrs. W. M. Chappell's home. The group will present a special March program on Home Missions and take up the annual offering, with southern Baptist women being asked to contribute $100,000 toward the Home Mission debt.
