Twelve Texas counties meet their assigned quotas as of March 9 marking progress nine days into the fundraising drive. Counties listed include Austin, Borden, Brazoria, Crockett, Dimmit, Kent, Kimble, Menard, Midland and Wilson with Wilson County showing $3,928.89 of a $7,100 quota. Volunteers urge continued effort as the drive advances next week.
Texas growers are slated to receive about 160 dollars per ton for the 1944 peanut crop, up from 142 dollars for 1948. War Food Administrator Jarvin Jones notified Representative Mollie Beckworth of Gilmer that Texas will use this price in the program, with the change affecting many farmers in the state.
Floresville Jasmine Chapter No 271 Order of the Eastern Star held its regular meeting at the Masonic Hall Monday. Visitors included Mrs Eunice Connell District Grand Matron Mrs Otelia Dye District Deputy Grand Matron and Mrs Anne Danze and Mrs Anne Cienfuegos all of San Antonio. Diltz, received the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement as deputy leader aboard a Flying Fortress during the October raid over Germany. Floresville friends learn S/Sgt Elmo Wright son of Mr and Mrs Elmo Wright has been promoted to second lieutenant. He is with a Tank Destroyer Battalion in Italy and previously attended A and J College Kingsville before enlisting on November 20 1940. In a letter to his parents dated February 27 he described writing by candlelight in a foxhole.
New postal rates take effect March twenty sixth. Local rates remain at 2 cents and 6 cent overseas for personnel, while U S airmail goes to 8 cents per ounce. Parcel post rises 3 percent with exceptions. Money order fees rise to 10 cents up to 2 50, then scale higher with values. Registered mail initial fee up to five dollars increases to 20 cents.
From the Taft Tribune comes news that Mrs F M Wiseman of Taft has been elected president of the Taft Parent-Teacher Association. Her husband is a rural route mail carrier in Taft. The Wisemans formerly lived at La Verne.
A. D. Richardson announces 1944 peanut support prices set at 160 per ton or 2.40 per bushel for Spanish type with 70 percent kernel content. War Food Administration will buy, loan, and contract with shellers or coops to supply farmers peanuts at the set base price for processing and distribution. Wilson county aims to plant 42,000 acres and expects farmers to meet the goal.
Fort Sam Houston reception center troops use a three day pass to enter a track meet. Cpl Ted K Haese from La Vernia dominates the Border Olympics Friday night by winning three events and posting strong times.
About 350 people attended a Boy Scout barbecue by the river bridge highway park on Tuesday night. The event, one of the most heavily attended in years, was hosted by the Masons in honor of District Deputy Grand Master H E Wiseman of La Vernia, with a Masonic meeting to follow.

Guadalupe G Sanchez a German prisoner of war writes his parents Eugene Sanchez and wife of Floresville under October 10.
