Mrs. J. H. Mayes serves as county chairman for the Texas Society For Crippled Children. Committees named in towns to collect funds support a statewide drive to enroll ten thousand members. Physicians and hospitals cooperate in all cities.
Mrs. John H. Mayes of Floresville heads the Texas Society for Crippled Children in Wilson County with 650 plus cases handled last year. Sub chairmen cover Floresville Stockdale Sutherland Springs LaVernia Fairview Poth Pandora and more as the society partners with the Vocational Rehabilitation Division to fundraise in March and April for twenty thousand Texas crippled children. Governor Allred calls Texans to enroll, while Charles F. Ashcroft and state officials urge civic groups to support the effort.
The wedding of Miss Jessie Wright of Lufkin to Mr. L. T. Commissioners was solemnized in San Antonio on Monday evening March 4 2085. The Texas Society note appears on page 8 with other social extracts and notices. The Commissioners Court met in regular session reporting delinquent tax collections. Friday March 15 is the final day to pay delinquent taxes with penalties waived. a large tax collector advertisement appears elsewhere.
Government backed reductions by San Antonio Public Service Company take effect with the April bill. N Bernard Gussett, South Texas Department general superintendent, announced in Wilson County that New Braunfels Boerne Hondo and nearby towns will see lower domestic rates. The plan lowers residential lighting and appliance charges with initial usage up to 85 KWH at 7 cents per KWH and savings of about one dollar per home with typical appliance use.
Conn recently told the school board to head toward rate considerations and S&P related topics discussed on page eight. The brief item notes the board’s agenda and the reference to Standard & Poor's in the briefing.
The Floresville high school football field at the old ball park on river road is being prepared with Bermuda grass. Groundwork includes plowing, harrowing, grading, and heavy sod laying. A relief labor program supports the project directed by an Athletic Council committee of John H. Mayes Jess Dennis L. F. Martin and W. A. Bump.
Floresville boy William Mills was elected president of Westmoorland College honor council amid a mid term reorganization following withdrawals. New council members include Jack Love of Del Rio and Bert Kincaid of Kerrville. dormitory members are Gene Callahan and Ed Hunter of Brownsville. The council handles disciplinary matters for two boys dormitories.
The Texas Relief Commission, with Federal Emergency Relief Administration funds, offers emergency seed loans for spring planting of commercial and forage crops. Loans available to all emergencies, not just relief rolls, with county committee approval and liens consideration. Non-relief loans capped at 50 dollars. waivers required where liens exist. Applications via County Relief Offices. program ends when Farm Credit Administration resumes.
The Male Chorus of Texas College of Arts and Industries Kingsville under Prof Paul M Riley presented a splendid program at Floresville Methodist Church Sunday evening at 7 30 taking the place of the regular service. The group from San Antonio arrived by train at 3 30 and drew a large crowd.
Floresville Baptist women completed a weeklong home missions prayer study. Leaders included Mrs. J C Merchant Mrs Wm Smith and Mrs C D Rhode with strong attendance. Young people contributed readings including Evelyn Merchant and Laurine McVea in prayer and poetry readings.
Floresville hosts a two day county meet on March 22 and 23 with events in high and grammar schools. Friday features opening remarks, choral singing, declamations, extemporaneous speeches, playground ball, debates, storytelling and a typing contest. Lunch is served by the Floresville PTA. Saturday includes memory pictures, arithmetic and music memory contests, essay writing and field events at the air grounds.
City treasurer L. H. Mitchell presents a five year financial summary from March 1, 1930 to date. Net city debt decreased by 23078.78 dollars. Old water works bonds totaling 10000 dollars have been retired.
Cotton producers in Wilson County urged to sign 1935 cotton contracts before March Saturday. Early, properly executed contracts sent to Washington for final approval will speed rental payments. Producers are urged to take the maximum 85 percent reduction under the Bankhead law in force for 1935. 10,500.
The city bought a 75,000 gallon water tower and land on a half acre near the M E Flores home. Chicago Bridge & Iron Works crews will begin erecting the tower within weeks, a three week job, with a new 8 inch main to the site. J M Tipton F B Seale and H J Ridout lead the project using relief labor.
Emmett L Whitsett was chosen Thursday night to represent the University in the Missouri Valley Oratorical Contest to be held March 21 to 23 in Lawrence Kansas Whitsett won the eliminations in the Law Building with Irving Goodfriend second and alternate Others in the contest included Jenkins Garrett Armand Schwartz Tors McNeely and Fred Phillips Judges were Tyle Rousse Ellwood Griscom Dr L W Payne Jr and Benjamin Davis The University has participated in the contest for thirteen years with nine colleges and universities in the Missouri Valley League including Washington University Kansas State College and the Universities of South Dakota Oklahoma Kansas Missouri Colorado Arkansas and Texas The event last year was in Austin
After lean years the stockman sees daylight as prices stabilize. Floresville resident W Hasse sold 34 high grade Hereford steers to a California buyer. The cattle weighed about 1130 pounds each and had been on feed for some time.
Floresville High School hosts its Junior Class two act comedy drama Hands Up in the high school auditorium tonight. Directed by Wm H Doyle principal of the Grammar School, the annual student production promises lively real life scenes and brisk entertainment as advance ticket sales suggest a packed house.
