Wilson County Commissioners Court and Sheriff Asa Fuller receive praise for yard, library, and jail renovations. Prisons workers helped trim trees and shrubs, with about 75 rose bushes added. The Chronicle-Journal urges carpet grass donations and a surrounding sidewalk to enhance the courthouse block.
The Floresville Church of Christ schedules the official opening of its new building on Sunday March 12. The congregation expands with an adjoining property purchase planned for 1958 and a three bedroom preacher’s home built later that year. Growth prompts a larger auditorium and classrooms. In 1960 construction began November 15 under elders H. R. Barber W. D. Hunter and M. M. Hughes with Paden Construction Company and financing via church bonds handled by The Security Plan of Fort Worth.
Floresville voters will see unopposed incumbents on April 4 as no new candidates filed by last Saturday. E. L. Woolsey Jr. is mayor, Wilbert R. Teltschik is treasurer, Sam Fore is city clerk, and three aldermen will be John V. Blake Jr., I. D. Flores Jr., and Andy G. Hunter. Flieller and Filleman continue as holdovers until next April.
The La Vernia Junior Livestock Show at the Chamber of Commerce Park drew about 600 attendees, praised for community support. The La Vernia Chamber, FFA, 4 H and FHA backed the event with a noon barbecue serving over 600, plus cake pie and bread judging by the Home Demonstration Club led by County Agent Fae Davis. Witness results to be announced next week.
The Poth Independent School District election will be held on Saturday April. Two trustees Edward Hosek and Warnell Moore will be on the official ballot running without opposition. At the Poth City residents section, aldermen race to be decided Tuesday April.
Floresville district plans Public School Week March six to ten with campus exhibits in store windows. Elementary grades invite parents for daytime visits and all open houses on March 10 are canceled except high school Friday night. Coffee and cake to welcome visitors. displays in town storefronts.
Floresville lost the regional final to Devine 39 at Victoria after topping Premont 40 and defeating Lyford 65 41 in the semi. The Jaguars finished a strong season with a 3 win and 2 defeat district record and praised sportsmanship from players and fans.
Feed grain reports are slow from farms in Wilson County as the ASC office prepares to establish a Grain Base. Edward B. Reed urges farmers who planted grain sorghum or corn in 1960 and 1969 to file reports at the ASC office, noting time and expense of farm-to-farm contact and the need to complete preliminary work. The office will be open Saturday March 11 for this purpose.
