Essay Winners Receive Soil Conservation Awards in Wilson County

Floresville High School's Felix Jarez won first in a 1973 essay contest with cash prizes totaling across schools in Wilson County. Winners from Floresville, LaVernia, Poth, Path, Stockdale, and others were honored in school assemblies with rewards ranging from four dollars to twelve fifty. Directors I B Ray Leroy Kirchoff and Harold Jarutowicz announced the district level prizes and district winners.

Pillsbury Winner Seeks Texas Conservation Award Contest

Mildred Rakowitz who won first place in the Soil and Water Conservation District program was entered in the Texas Conservation Award Program to compete for additional prizes in area and statewide contests.

Favorite Foods Show preparatory meeting announced

A special session led by Jeanette Kratzke assistant county extension agent 4 H foods and nutrition will be held Thursday March 1 1973 at 7 00 p m in the district courtroom Floresville. Attendance is pre registration for entering the Favorite Food Show and important information will be shared for entrants. If you cannot attend be sure to send a representative.

SPST Lodge 107 holds its regular meeting on March 4 at 4 p.m. A games party starts at 6 p.m. Refreshments served. The Youth Club meets at 3 p.m. Skaters gather at 2 p.m. Everyone is urged to attend as Camp approaches in a few months.

Mrs Jackson Transferred to San Antonio Hospital

Mrs H B Jackson, a Floresville Memorial Hospital patient with a broken hip, was moved to Baptist Memorial Hospital in San Antonio. She is in intensive care with a blood clot in the lung but responding to medication and was slightly improved Monday afternoon, taken off oxygen.

Peanut Growers Meeting and Barbecue in 1973

The Wilson County Peanut Growers annual meeting and barbecue supper drew about 275 members at the Sacred Heart Annex on February 23, 1973. Wayne Eaves spoke as executive secretary of TPB. five new directors were elected Felix Janek Jr Erich Bielefeld Jr R B McCloskey Richard Janek and David Pfeil. The group thanked the Wilson 4-H leaders and guests from Atascosa and Frio Counties. A note announced social security benefits for a disabled child depends on disability onset prior to age 22.

Brennan Sworn In as Secretary of Labor at White House

Peter J. Brennan of New York was sworn in by Chief Justice Warren E. Burger on February 2, 1973 at the White House becoming the 13th Secretary of Labor. A longtime trade unionist, he has led the NYC and NYS Building and Construction Trades Councils and held various public civic and church roles.

Three Oaks Home Demonstration Club aids ambulance squad

The Three Oaks Home Demonstration Club hosts a Sausage and Pancake Supper on March 2 at 7:00 in the Three Oaks Community Hall to raise funds for the Wilson County Volunteer Ambulance Service, which seeks $8000 to buy an ambulance. Proceeds, auction of baked goods and crafts, and Red Cross course completion by March 1 mark a push for county support. Contributions may be sent to Wilson County Ambulance Association, Box 845, Floresville 78114.

Farmer meeting on Herbicides and Fertilization of Peanuts

A farmer meeting on herbicides and fertilizer practices for peanuts and related crops will be held at 7 00 p m on Monday. The meeting is sponsored by Blanco County Extension or local agricultural group.

Norris C Machost Floresville representative for United Gas was among fifteen long time South Texas Division employees honored at a San Marcos service awards dinner on February 26. Machost earned twenty five years of continuous service. the group totaled 405 years. Jackson C Hinds of Houston, United Gas CEO, presented watches and pins as other executives attended. The dinner was one of six held throughout the three state service area to honor long-time workers.

Tigers Take Second at Karnes City Relays

Karnes City hosts a five team meet after Wintergarden Relays were canceled. Stockdale wins with 102 points. Tigers top rivals include Falls City Goliad Floresville and Karnes City. Key performances: John Lackness wins Open 220 with 22.9. Gayland Pelech strong in relays. Burleson contributes in 440 and mile relay. Team plans trip to Pettus next Friday with added field events.

Floresville Taxpayers League Forms to Aid Taxpayers

Floresville citizens formed the Floresville Taxpayers League to protect taxpayers interests. Officers elected were J. O. Bramlow DVM president Camilo Talamantez vice president and Mrs Leslie Brown secretary treasurer. Three candidates were selected for city council Lotspeich Tejada and Trevino. City election scheduled for Saturday April 7.

Floresville Tigers Open 1973 Season at Home

The Floresville Tiger Baseball team starts the 1973 season on Friday March 2 with a 4 15 pm double header against Samuel Clemens. Tommy Rameriz will pitch and John Atkins will catch for the Junior Varsity in Game 1.
