Farmers Rally For Wilson Soil District Election

Wilson County farmers and landowners show strong interest in forming a Wilson Soil Conservation District with a countywide vote set for Saturday March 9. Twenty one districts share this first election under a new law, with guides urging citizens to learn the program and vote, as a two thirds majority is needed for district approval.

Floresville Visitor Highlights Fourth Court Members

Judge J R Norvell of the Fourth Court of Civil Appeals in San Antonio visited Floresville last Saturday with Associate Justice W O Murray. Norvell, appointed in January by Gov O Daniel to replace Justice C S Slatton, formerly lived in Edinburg with the Kelley and Norvell firm and will run in July primary to succeed himself for the 47 county district.

City Sends Johnson To A. & M. School

Tom Johnson the new Floresville sewage system superintendent spent a week at College Station attending a waterworks and sewage instruction school at A and M College. Over 300 attended and received instruction to acquaint him with the latest methods of modern plants. He had attended the same school last year.

Important Legion Meeting Here Tonight

Floresville Post No 38 American Legion will hold an important meeting at the courthouse tonight at 7 30. A matter of special importance to all members will come up for discussion. Officers urge full attendance tonight.

Revival Sermons Stir Gonzales Methodist Meeting

Rev Kenneth C Minter of First Methodist Church Gonzales preaches stirring revival sermons attracting growing crowds at 10:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Services with cooperative Baptist and other denominations feature a large gospel choir and special numbers. Nights honor Sunnyside Fairview Stockdale LaVeria Sutherland Springs and Welchs congregations with guest attendance. Plans to close the meeting Sunday night are undecided.

Captain W. L. Wright Enters Wilson County Sheriff Race

Capt. W L Wright, a longtime peace officer and Texas Ranger, announced his candidacy for Wilson County sheriff. Born near Yorktown, Wright has 45 years in law enforcement, including 15 years as sheriff, and previously led the Texas Sheriffs Association. He resigned sheriff Jan 1 1917 to return to Ranger service.

About fifteen high school track athletes reported for practice this week for the County Meet. Coach Irwin expects several more next week. The coach and five boys will enter the Atascosa County Relays at Pleasanton tomorrow. Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace assured Congressman Richard M. Kleberg that Emergency Crop and Feed Loans are ready to assist drought distressed Texas farmers. Loans for 1940 are now being made in Texas with forms and facilities available in all counties, and a coordinated loan plan is in place to speed aid.

Improvement of Corpus Christi Road Planned

The highway committee of the Chamber of Commerce chaired by Franz Groos and State Highway Department officials discussed the modernization of the Corpus Christi Road from San Antonio through Floresville Karnes City Kenedy and Linton to the Gulf City. The new State Highway No. 9 linking with U S Highway 281 north of Pleasanton offers a shorter direct route to San Antonio but leaves several San Antonio trade area cities underserved.

Rev Hearn Spruce Preached Here At Floresville Church

Rev Hearn Spruce preached the opening sermon of the Floresville Methodist revival last Sunday at 11 o clock. He is an evangelist in the Nazarene Church and was raised in Floresville where he attended high school before college. He and his wife and baby visited his parents before leaving Tuesday for California for several meetings in coming months.
