Wilson County farmers and landowners show strong interest in forming a Wilson Soil Conservation District with a countywide vote set for Saturday March 9. Twenty one districts share this first election under a new law, with guides urging citizens to learn the program and vote, as a two thirds majority is needed for district approval.
Judge J R Norvell of the Fourth Court of Civil Appeals in San Antonio visited Floresville last Saturday with Associate Justice W O Murray. Norvell, appointed in January by Gov O Daniel to replace Justice C S Slatton, formerly lived in Edinburg with the Kelley and Norvell firm and will run in July primary to succeed himself for the 47 county district.
Rules from the Wilson County Meet outline key baseball regulations for March 29. The notes cover strikes, base advances on passed balls and overthrows, restrictions on scoring, bunt legality, and third strike outs.
Tom Johnson the new Floresville sewage system superintendent spent a week at College Station attending a waterworks and sewage instruction school at A and M College. Over 300 attended and received instruction to acquaint him with the latest methods of modern plants. He had attended the same school last year.
Floresville Post No 38 American Legion will hold an important meeting at the courthouse tonight at 7 30. A matter of special importance to all members will come up for discussion. Officers urge full attendance tonight.
Rev Kenneth C Minter of First Methodist Church Gonzales preaches stirring revival sermons attracting growing crowds at 10:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Services with cooperative Baptist and other denominations feature a large gospel choir and special numbers. Nights honor Sunnyside Fairview Stockdale LaVeria Sutherland Springs and Welchs congregations with guest attendance. Plans to close the meeting Sunday night are undecided.
A Sutherland Springs church hosts a Sunday play titled Never Faileth as part of its faith outreach, inviting attendees to an event featuring local performers and congregants in a ceremonial program.
Capt. W L Wright, a longtime peace officer and Texas Ranger, announced his candidacy for Wilson County sheriff. Born near Yorktown, Wright has 45 years in law enforcement, including 15 years as sheriff, and previously led the Texas Sheriffs Association. He resigned sheriff Jan 1 1917 to return to Ranger service.
Joe Winkler a Carpenter merchant from Carpenter announces his bid for County Commissioner of Precinct No 3 to succeed his brother in law Chas Foegelle of LaVernia. At 53 he cites 29 years running a general store and calls for personal attention to duties and tax reduction while seeking voters support.
Banks announce closures on Saturday March 2 in observance of Texas Independence Day. The notice lists First City National Bank Floresville and First National Bank Poth among participating institutions and asks customers to plan accordingly.
About fifteen high school track athletes reported for practice this week for the County Meet. Coach Irwin expects several more next week. The coach and five boys will enter the Atascosa County Relays at Pleasanton tomorrow. Seniors listed include Bob Stevens Cassy Garza Douglas Potts Bill Houston Sam Houston Clarence Gillig Clark Murray Nicholas Flores Thomas Luker Jim Masters Ralston Hayden William Warren Leroy Lange Bill Habermann and Fred Rodriguez. Junior teams practice baseball and track. J P Kelly coaches the juniors. High school junior girls practice baseball as do Ward School teams.
Ray Brown announces candidacy for County Commissioner Precinct No 3 in the July primary. He has lived in the county nine years, runs a dairy farm in Midway, previously lived in Bexar County, and has no prior public office but pledges full-time focus on the office and serving the People’s business.
Wilson County becomes a hot spot as McKenzie and Brock of Houston enter the field with a 4000 foot Wilcox test on the McDaniel land in the A Garza Survey. A second 4100 acre test, 400 feet from Stapper Oil, will probe deeper horizons, page 8.
Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace assured Congressman Richard M. Kleberg that Emergency Crop and Feed Loans are ready to assist drought distressed Texas farmers. Loans for 1940 are now being made in Texas with forms and facilities available in all counties, and a coordinated loan plan is in place to speed aid.

Mrs. Elizabeth Dillon receives word Friday evening that her father Mr. F. M. Faulkner died at 9 p.m. February 23 in Plainview Texas after a period of ill health. Funeral was held in Plainview Sunday. Sympathy extended to the bereaved family.
County schools may use Food and Surplus Commodities Corp items to supplement meals for undernourished students. In January 1940 Wilson County did not participate, while other Texas districts report improved health and attendance. The highway committee of the Chamber of Commerce chaired by Franz Groos and State Highway Department officials discussed the modernization of the Corpus Christi Road from San Antonio through Floresville Karnes City Kenedy and Linton to the Gulf City. The new State Highway No. 9 linking with U S Highway 281 north of Pleasanton offers a shorter direct route to San Antonio but leaves several San Antonio trade area cities underserved.

Rev Hearn Spruce preached the opening sermon of the Floresville Methodist revival last Sunday at 11 o clock. He is an evangelist in the Nazarene Church and was raised in Floresville where he attended high school before college. He and his wife and baby visited his parents before leaving Tuesday for California for several meetings in coming months.
The Alamo District F F A banquet at Poteet drew senior Ag students from Poteet Jourdanton Pleasan ton Charlotte and Burbank San Antonio chapters. Magnus Smith Pleasanton delivered an inspiring talk on practical education values. S W Burks of A and I and former Poteet educator spoke. vocational teachers and press were also invited.
