A community gathering featured a program on government service and messaging in the district. Menu items included breakfast lunch and dinner with wheatless and meatless days highlighted to support an economy and public welfare in the region.
Honor Roll of Dry Creek School pupils and two months after Travis Miss Hattie Varnon, teacher, celebrate a rousing patriotic address by Field Marshal C Ellis of Lockhart representing the Texas State Council of Defense. Judge Ellis introduced by District Attorney T Paris drew enthusiastic applause and earned an invitation to Floresville for a county rally. The reorganized Council of Defense outlined plans for a citywide campaign as conditions paused further attendance.
A African American man named Sadberry was arrested after assaulting farmer John J. Ingan in a field, striking with a sledge hammer and later returning with a Winchester. He was chased off, then arrested by Sheriff Carnes, after an examining trial set bond at 500 dollars, which remains unpaid.
Miss Anna Hughes left Floresville for Washington to join the War Risk Department after a strong civil service exam showing her ready for federal work. Her sister Elna Hughes trains as a Red Cross nurse in California, both daughters of the late Capt. L. P. Hughes, longtime county official. The obituary notes the death of J. D. McInvale, who died after poisoning himself while choosing death over a painful illness. His funeral was held at Marcelona, with family and friends expressing sympathy.
A government seed distribution arrived in the afternoon causing anxiety about delays. Mr Lehmbeg set wires in motion and farmers statewide were informed. Wagons autos and vehicles from across the county gathered at the depot early yesterday. The event drew a high-class crowd with about $12,000 worth of seed distributed.
The Floresville Cemetery Association will meet next Friday afternoon March 8 at 3 with Mrs Alma Craighead. All members are invited and urged to attend. Mrs Jim McDaniel, Secretary. Rev Beddoe Attends Farewell Service and Reunions in Old Log Cabin. Rev A F Beddoe, pastor of the Baptist Church, recently returned from Dallas where he attended a farewell service for his brother Dr R E Beddoe and uncle Rev Hal F Buckner, who depart for China as Southern Baptist missionaries. Beddoe reports an interesting trip. He spent last Saturday at Buckhorns Home eight miles away with descendants of Dr. Reed where a farewell dinner for the missionaries was served in the old log house in which Buckner was born 85 years ago. The log house, built 98 years ago in Tennessee by Buckner’s father, was 13 years old when the future leader was born. Friends of Buckner later moved the log house, and 10 serchteets tuned and 28 great grandchildren attended.
The Harrell family expresses heartfelt appreciation to friends and neighbors in Floresville for their kindness during illness and after the death of Miss Nannie Harrell. Mrs. M J Harrell and Family.
A telegram from State Food Administrator E A Peden to the local Food Administrator announces that retailers may sell farmers 70 percent of normal wheat flour requirements without substitutes, provided the farmer supplies a written statement listing on hand home grown substitutes and approximate quantities.
San Antonio Chamber of Commerce urged Van S Ingram and other landowners to plant castor beans. Government guarantee is 3.6 per 46 pound bushel, after handling costs. seed covers fourteen acres, cost about 6.25 at San Antonio, plus a bond of 1.00 per acre. Also notes the death of Uncle Joe Robertson of Stockdale Texas born 1842 and died 1918.
Miss Nannie Harrell born near Hartford Arkansas June 7 1876 died February 23 1918 at sister’s home in Floresville Texas after pneumonia. Funeral was held Saturday at 3 30 PM at the Methodist Church and burial followed in Floresville Cemetery. Survived by an aged mother three sisters Mrs Tipton of Floresville Mrs J D Odem of Sutherland Springs and Mrs C M McDonald of Salisaw Oklahoma. brothers W F Harrell Dallas H B Harrell Calvin and J E Harrell San Antonio. Pastor W N Carl officiated.
