Drought Aid Offered to Wilson County Farmers

Farm Security Office partners with local aid effort after drought meeting with Congressman Kleberg. Eligible farmers must live on or own a farm and apply within seven days at the New York Store location. Pioneer Resident R A Lackey Dies in San Antonio

Robert Alexander Lackey, a Wilson County long-time resident born May 12 1860 in Karnes County, died in San Antonio on June 11 1939 at 815 pm. Funeral services were held June 12 at Murray Funeral Home with rites at Sacred Heart Church Rev Fred Drees officiating. Burial followed in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Pallbearers included I D Flores R J Schroller Paul E Schmidt J G Youngblood D W Marshall and M M Hughes. Lackey was married in 1887 and lived in Wilson County for decades, noted as a healthful, upright, generous man.

Elliott Takes Club Members To Palacios

Agent Fred C. Elliott led 20 members of the Wilson County 4-H Clubs to Palacios on Monday for the District Club encampment. Prominent speakers and contests highlighted the program while bathing boating and fishing provided amusements that drew several hundred club boys and agents.

Old Age Assistance Plan Delayed Pending Attorney General Opinion

AUSTIN June 14. Old Age Assistance Director Little said no investigations would be conducted under the liberalized act until the Attorney General's Department issues an ruling to guide policies. Training for investigators will follow, likely in one to ten days after action. About 30 000 registrations exist statewide and the lengthy process will delay certifying recipients for pro rata monthly funds. A new plan will be submitted to the Social Security Board in Washington for final approval or disapproval.

Youths End San Antonio River Trip In Shipwreck

Two San Antonio youths Fred Burkett Jr and Buddy Autrey reported their boat was wrecked while attempting a seven day down river trip to the gulf. They described many log jams, a 15 foot high obstruction, battered gear and a leaking craft forcing them to abandon the voyage with food running low and plans to seek work after a three week vacation.

Two Days Rodeo At Wilson County Fair Grounds Floresville

Wilson County Rodeo Association plans a two day event at the Wilson County Fair Grounds in Floresville on June 24 and 25 starting at 10 30 a m each day. Local and regional riders will compete in cow pony races bronc riding bull riding calf roping wild cow milking and tie down and breakaway roping with quality stock. A barbecue dinner is served both days and admission is 35 cents for adults 15 cents for children under 10 free. A dance with live music follows the Saturday show.

First Watermelons Shipped From Stockdale 1939 Crop

The first year of watermelons from Texas for the 1939 crop shipped today from Stockdale. J. H. Lorenz, local watermelon buyer, sent the produce to Schultz Brokerage Company of Kansas City, Missouri. The melons were raised by Audie Stadler and Dec Ar tin, farmers in the Stockdale community.

Mrs. Lee McDaniel Named Floresville Postmaster

Mrs. Lee McDaniel was officially appointed postmaster of Floresville with a May 17 start date and will assume charge July 15 1939. She had served as acting postmaster since November 1 1938, succeeding her late husband who died October 20. The appointment certificate bears signatures of President Roosevelt and Postmaster General Farley. The staff and patrons welcomed the appointment, noting her efficient service and familiarity with office operations.

Sutherland Springs Rodeo Set for Next Sunday

Sutherland Springs will hold a big rodeo next Sunday June 18 at the park. It starts 10 30 a m with bronc riding bull riding wild cow milking tie down and break away. Barbecue at noon. Swimming pool open all day. Admission 35c and 15c. Several rodeo performers have entered and promise plenty of action.

Ellinghausen Visit Ties West Indies to Fort Worth ties

Walter A. Ellinghausen of Curacao Dutch West Indies spent a few days in Fort Worth with his brother W J Ellinghausen after visiting his father H F Ellinghausen and Atty Edward Ellinghausen. His family had been in San Antonio visiting Mrs Ellinghausen's relatives. Walter spent years in foreign countries including Mexico and Venezuela before becoming chief accountant and treasurer of a large oil firm. See continuation on Page 5.

Big Family Of Scorpions Exhibited In Floresville

Mrs. R. L. Powell of Floresville found 38 scorpions in her bed and discovered 37 offspring clinging to the mother. The live brood was displayed at the Floresville city hall, drawing local curiosity about the unusual arachnid family.

Stewards Host Chicken Barbecue at Methodist Church

The board of stewards held a monthly social at the Mitchell home with L. H. Mitchell and R. A. Wiseman Jr. as hosts. A chicken barbecue with trimmings followed by a business meeting under the yard lights. Rev. A. M. Foster was away at a pastors’ school, and Dr. W. W. Jackson of the University of San Antonio was invited to Floresville to speak on the uniting conference in Kansas City.
