County road funds split displeasing to all precincts
Commissioners adopt a new road allocation formula for the third year. Three of four back a plan that allocates the first half of road and bridge funding equally among four precincts and divides the remainder by mileage. Precinct 3 Commissioner Bobby Lynn opposes, noting his precinct loses $22,000. Auditor Ray Wolff tabulated plans using last year’s $2,341,726, with weighted mileage totals shifting funds toward paved roads and away from dirt roads.

Crash claims two lives on Hwy 181 and FM 537
On Sunday July 23 at 8 15 two people were killed in a two car crash at the intersection of Highway 181 and FM 537. Leora Masters of Floresville driving a 1995 Oldsmobile failed to yield to Anna Melton of San Antonio who was in a 2003 Honda. Masters died at the scene while Melton and a passenger were airlifted to University Hospital and the remaining four occupants were taken to Connally Memorial Hospital with two later dying.

Educator Kenneth Ritchie retires after 48 years of service
Kenneth Ritchie retired Friday July 14 after 48 years as a teacher and administrator in Texas and beyond. A Nixon High School graduate he started at Rhodes Junior High then Edison and four high schools before a 1990 hearing officer role and a 1992 first retirement. He returned to teaching after a short retirement and remained connected to Floresville and San Antonio area schools with his wife Annie at his side.

Drugs and arms found after Floresville stop
A routine traffic stop by Floresville police uncovered four hydrocodone tablets, $828, and two firearms. Officer Ramsey cited Lee Domingues for lack of license and warrants and charged him with drug paraphernalia and weapons offenses. Pascual Estrada Cortez faced drug paraphernalia and drug possession counts.
