Celebrations Across Wilson County Amid Showers on July Fourth
July Fourth events drew large crowds in Wilson County despite sultry heat and intermittent showers. La Vernia Chamber of Commerce hosted an all day affair with barbecue, baseball, keno, and a late night dance. The Wilson County Farm Bureau marked its Sixth Annual celebration at Hermann Sons Hall in Poth. A Poth Bobcats blue bonnet league game was halted by rain then resumed. Poth won 6 to 1 on a heavy field.

Floresville’s 19 year old Joan Varnon entered as Miss Floresville and won the Miss South Texas title at the July Fourth pageant held at Max Starcke Park. A junior at A and I College, she previously won Miss Kingsville and will advance to Port Arthur then Atlantic City. Varnon is the daughter of Mr and Mrs J M Varnon and receives support from the Floresville Chamber of Commerce City Floresville Lions Club American Legion and Floresville Chronicle Journal.
