La Vernia July 4th Celebration Draws Hundreds
The La Vernia community hosted a large Independence Day celebration at the parks with thousands in attendance. The La Vernia Chamber of Commerce organized a day of games, races with cash prizes, a barbecue, dancing, and music by Texas Top Hands of San Antonio. Proceeds funded a new water works system for the town.

Warning About Fire Alarm Calls On July Fourth

HARLINGEN July 3 The 1950 Valley cotton crop is the earliest on record with 10,009 bales ginned through June 29 the most ever by that date J A Alderdice head of the Federal State Inspection Service said hot weevils were rising to alarming proportions but the crop is expected to exceed 300,000 bales Cameron County Jed led early ginnings with 4,327 bales Hidalgo 31,130 and Willacy 2,482 reported.

Fire destroys home of the Dann family near Path
Fire at about Thursday afternoon last week nearly leveled the Del Dunn family residence one mile south of Path on the Ko Tenda estate. The blaze, likely from a defective flue, started in the kitchen wood stove. Path fire department fought with limited water supply as Floresville firefighters assisted but a broken rod on the truck two miles out hindered efforts. Neighbors saved some items, but most furnishings were lost. Estimated damage runs about 6000 dollars.
