Stockdale hosts its third Watermelon Jubilee amid severe drought and a lean crop, honoring citizenship and local cooperation. A large parade featured Rancho Grande Farms displays, Floresville High School Band under Fritz Teltschik, and praise for community unity led by Senator Morris Roberts and President H enemann.
Fire originated in an upstairs room destroyed the farm home of Ed Jiral and his family at 4 am last Wednesday. Neighbors and family saved some items before a total loss. A neighbor suffered painful injuries fighting the blaze and was treated locally. condition improving.
Austin report notes a three year extension for auto drivers licenses. Details indicate official action with potential effective date and regional implementation. Further information pending from state department announcements and local offices.
Floresville Tennis Club elected Dr. B E Shedden as president Miss Mary Elizabeth Wiseman as vice president Dr J W Blake Jr as treasurer and Bruce Mangum as manager The club will host San Antonio Public Service Co teams Sunday at 3 00 using Woodlawn Courts for return matches including men and women singles and doubles and mixed doubles.
In Campbellton Texas a large tribute was paid to Joe Kerr 67 a West Texas rancher banker and merchant who died in San Antonio after a long illness. His funeral was at Sacred Heart Church Campbellton with rites at 10 am and burial in the local Catholic Cemetery. Kerr born in Ireland in 1872 immigrated to Texas with his parents in the 1880s and built a long mercantile career in Campbellton Tilden and Sanderson before his passing.
Honorable Charley Lockhart state treasurer and aide C H Williams spent a short Floresville afternoon Wednesday greeting friends en route to a Corpus Christi district meeting of county judges and commissioners. Melville Hughes Jr son of the district clerk works in Lockhart's office and joined the visit.
All Wilson County school transfers must be submitted by midnight Monday July 1. August 1 is the final deadline for transfer requests this year.
A citywide Methodist tent revival will be held on the Stockdale church lawn from Sunday July 9 through July 23. Rev. Alfred R. Wells of Dallas will preach, with special song services and a large choir at each gathering. Preaching daily at 10 am and 8 pm. The community is urged to attend.
Five Wilson County 4-H Club boys led by County Agent and Mrs F C G Elliott attend the Farmers Short Course at Texas A and M College College Station on July 5 and 6. Participants include Marvin Ehlers Elwood Zunker Jack Bruce Billy Bundrick and Paul Casares. Ehlers Zunker and Billy Blandrick will compete in the state 4-H Club Field Crops Judging Contest.
A public meeting is held in the district courtroom of the courthouse at 8 15 PM to reorganize the Floresville Chamber of Commerce. Business and professional people are urged to attend to support a serious effort for a year round program benefiting the town and county with no fanfare or speeches.
Rain fell Friday night across Bednarz and Billimek areas several miles east of Floresville near Poth. Some farms reported two inches or more, while Lopez Service Station area saw about half an inch. Local reports from Ad. Miculka and others indicate modest showers extended to nearby locales but not further.
Floresville Church of Christ hosts growing revival meetings with Frank L. Cox and Russell Lewis Jr of Austin delivering preaching and song service. The series continues through Sunday night with an open invitation to all to attend the gospel event.
Voters will go to the polls Saturday to approve issuing 20000 in Sewer Revenue Bonds to support the citys sanitary program funded by the Works Progress Administration. City council notes bonds will be repaid from sewer revenues and will not raise taxes. This measure aims to fund a modern disposal plant serving most of the city with no lien on city property.
Earl B Patterson district rural supervisor for the Farm Security Administration met in Floresville Thursday with Wilson County Supervisor F G Roeder. The FSA staff praised national office support and cooperation with Senator Tom Connally and Congressman Dick Kleberg in bringing immediate relief to the drought-stricken region.
Claude Atkinson, longtime State Highway Department foreman at Pleasanton, was transferred to Wilson County July 1 to succeed Bert Cameron as department foreman. Cameron, now assigned to Frie County with Dilley headquarters, will supervise four other counties. The Camerons moved into a newly completed Southmore home, and expect to take an apartment in Dilley temporarily. Atkinson and his family have rented a new home. Pleasanton regrets the loss and welcomes him, while praising Cameron’s excellent maintenance program and wishing both couples well.
Porter E. Ross of Robstown has been elected vocational agriculture teacher at LaVernia to replace Adon Duncan, who moves to Poteet. Ross comes from a strong Robstown family and is a Texas A and I College graduate. The LaVernia FFA chapter showed strong support for the program as it started last year, and Duncan’s first year at Poteet is praised for high honors.
The American Legion will hold its next regular meeting at the courthouse on Friday night July 14 at 8 30 o clock. A good speaker will address the gathering.
Jim Harrison McDaniel, a longtime Wilson County native and renowned rancher, died at Oxford and Archer Hospital at 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday July 5 after years of declining health. Funeral services were held at his daughter’s home with Rev. A. M. Foster officiating, followed by interment at Floresville Cemetery. McDaniel, son of John Daniel and Martha McDaniel, left a large family and spent his life in the county’s open country, remembered as a pioneer and steadfast community figure.
E F Ullmann well known farmer and Farmers League of Texas secretary sustained a painful knee injury in a Saturday night auto collision near Patton's Service Station on Highway 16 east of town. He was treated at Nix Hospital in San Antonio then returned home and is reported improving. Joe Brooks of this place suffered facial cuts and bruises. both cars were badly wrecked.
The Stockdale Chapter of the Future Farmers of America received a 14 inch silver loving cup for having the most attractive club float in the Third Annual Watermelon Jubilee parade. The event was held in Stockdale on Friday and Saturday June 30 and July 1. The FFA float featured a Watermelon theme.
