John C. Polasek has been selected as a recipient of a Robert A. Welch Foundation Scholarship awarded through the Texas Interscholastic League.
The Wilson County Health Department Sanitation Program led by Lee Roy Smith assists in rabies control requiring bite victims to contact Smith promptly for observation guidance. The Welch Foundation awards ten four year scholarships. Polasek won first in Science for Class A at the State UIL Meet and third as a sophomore in 1969. John Polasek, TEES Scholar at Texas A&M, plans chemical engineering. son of Mr and Mrs Johnnie Polasek of Poth.
Texas DPS Director Colonel Wilson E Speir estimated that during the long July fourth holiday weekend traffic accidents will claim 48 lives in the state. He urged Texans to obey safety laws drive defensively avoid fatigue and not drive after drinking to reduce the toll.
The Floresville City Council will convene at City Hall at 7 00 p m today Thursday for the regular meeting. City officials will hear reports and discuss upcoming town matters.
The Floresville Eagles renamed their baseball field John M Tejada Memorial Field. A brief re dedication preceded the Blue Bonnet All Star game with Rev Gino Bernasconi delivering the invocation. Delbert Traeger threw the first ball as the North All Stars led 3 2 before rain halted play in the fifth.
Senator John Tower reports Senate Public Works Committee final approval for the Ecleton Creek Watershed Project to serve Guadalupe Wilson Kames and DeWitt counties. The project is eligible for 2 million dollars in USDA funds. total estimated cost is 5 million with local funds covering the remainder.
Congressman Abraham Chick Karen announced House and Senate Public Works Committees have authorized the Ecleto Creek Watershed Project. The multiagency plan spans Guadalupe Wilson Karnes and DeWitt counties with San Antonio River Authority participation. Eleven dams will be built over about ten years, aiming to cut annual flood damages by 70 to 75 percent and boost flood protection sediment reduction water quality and regional land use and recreation opportunities.
Rockport Art Association schedules the second annual festival at Harbor Oaks Subdivision across from Key Allegro on July 3 and 4 with 100 booths showcasing acrylic oil watercolor pastel metal wood sculpture glass batik and more. Food and drink concessions will be available and hours run 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 3 and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on July 4.
The Ecleto Creek Watershed Work Plan approves land treatment and floodwater retarding structures to protect 13,000 acres, reducing flood damage to crops and roads. Wilson County community events include La Vernia 4-H shows, Watermelon Jubilee in Stockdale, Path Youth Picnic, Floresville Peanut Festival, and a planned Show Barn on Highway 97 near Floresville.
Edward Uhlig son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Uhlig will be one of the Dukes in the Court of Flowers Coronation of the 1971 Floresville Peanut Festival He will escort Duchess Sybil McKnight He is a 1972 Floresville High School senior member of the Floresville Spanish Club and the San Antonio Amateur Astronomy Club active in 4-H He is president of Sunnyside 4-H for two years elected County Chairman of Wilson County 4-H Council He entered District and State 4-H competition He has served Sacred Heart Church as a commentator for two years Edward is honored to represent Floresville as a Duke in the festival.
Mr and Mrs Fred Quintanilla and sons Abel and Joel of Floresville were involved in an auto crash while visiting Illinois friends. In Missouri the collision occurred on the return trip Joel was uninjured and the other three relatives were in McCume Hospital Carthage Missouri in fair condition
Lion Geo Reed of San Antonio served as installing officer for the Floresville Lions Club installation of officers held last Thursday at Wright's Cafe on June 24. New officers named include President L. H. Howard, 1st Vice President Edward Reed, 2nd Vice President Carl Eschenburg, 3rd Vice President Howard Schutt, Secretary Stanley Toeppich, Treasurer W. D. Cox, Tail Twister Kenneth Latta, Lion Tamer J. C. Turer, Directors J. Henry Perry Neal Parker Geo. Winyard Joe H. Fietsam. The installation emphasized upcoming club service plans.
The SPJ meeting now occurs July 1, not July 4, and the Youth Club session is rescheduled to July 1 as well. The notices stress a unified shift in dates for both groups.

Don C Fietsam son of the publisher began duties this week with the Floresville Chronicle journal. He assists in all phases of work for the weekly publication and currently makes his home with his parents. He is a Floresville High School graduate and a licensed beautician with prior work in San Antonio before returning to Floresville.
Tarleton State College in Stephenville Texas hosts the Annual Meeting of the Southwestern Peanut Growers Association on Friday July 16 with a 9 30 a m start. The program includes two speakers and reports on peanut research and price support activity. The association has coordinated peanut marketing in Texas Oklahoma and New Mexico for about 34 years. Ross Wilson association manager will report on activities for year ending June 30 1971.
Several new and additional taxes become effective July 1. General Sales Tax rises from 3.25% to 4%. City taxes stay at 1%. Cigarette tax climbs from 15.5c to 18.5c per pack. A new fee or rate increases from $4.30 to $5.00. Citizens of many Eastern states likely to feel impact.
The Floresville Barracks and Ladies Auxiliary plan their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday July 6 at 2 p.m. at the Emil Lotee Q.M.
The Floresville Chronicle Journal urges all contributors to submit copy for the July 8 edition as early as possible with a Friday morning deadline of July 2. Late submissions may be used at the editor's discretion. The office will be closed Monday July 5.
Floats from Floresville led the Luling Watermelon Thump Parade on June 26 with the Queen Mary Anne Woolsey and Duchess Yvonne Dzink among riders. The Queen's float captured second place in Division I as Floresville participants and families attended the event.
Floresville and Poth will be closed all day Monday July 5 in observance of the 4th of July. Banks in both cities will also observe the holiday.
