La Vernia July Fourth celebration promises cash prizes and barbecue
La Vernia Chamber of Commerce stage a big July Fourth event at the Chamber hall with a $1,000 cash giveaway from 1 PM to 10 PM. $100 prizes every hour, a barbecue dinner and supper for $1 per plate, live music by the La Vernia Play Boys, and Texas Top Hands for the closing dance. County Ships Over Three Million Pounds Green Black-Eyed Peas
Wilson County in Southwest Texas shipped 3,175,000 pounds of green black-eyed peas with 2,550,000 from Floresville, 600,000 from Poth, and 25,000 from Stockdale. Most went to Texas canning plants, some out of state, at about 2 cents per pound in the field. An early freeze and drought reduced yields from 12,000 acres. Floresville hosts two main processing plants, L. R. Barron Company of Athens and Behman & Company of Mineola, with local reps, which buy peas from within and beyond the county. Prices remain favorable locally despite a short county crop due to shippers.

Poth Sets Large Crowd for Annual Barbecue Day
The Poth community hosts its annual all day barbecue and celebration at Hermann Sons Hall on Sunday July 3. Sponsored by Path Business Men's Club, the event features barbecue dinner at 11:30 and supper at 4:30, music, bingo, games, and a Bluebonnet League baseball game between Poth Bobcats and Nordheim at 2:30. Watermelons Shipped From Wilson County Reach 212 Carloads
Up to Thursday, 212 train cars of Wilson County watermelons had been shipped to Texas markets and beyond. Stockdale alone sent 190 carloads, Floresville 22, with shipments led by the Donaho brothers. Stockdale expects about 75 more carloads, per KR O Barnes and T L Stevenson.
