Stockdale Watermelon Jubilee draws crowds in Wilson County
Stockdale celebrates its sixth Watermelon Jubilee with thousands attending from across Wilson County and neighboring Texas towns. Opening parade showed decorated cars, floats, horse riders, and the Floresville Band. Mayor Floyd Hutton and state leaders attended. Miss Wilma Peavy crowned Jubilee queen. A rodeo, coronation, street dance, and watermelons highlighted the celebration despite rain and a storm that paused the rodeo Saturday night. Floresville sent Miss Jeanette Smith and escort Wayne Connally as part of the opening events.

Rain halted a large Sokols event at Sokol Hall four miles west of Floresville after a capacity gymnastics display featuring participants from Corpus Christi Houston and other Texas cities. Despite the downpour the crowd dispersed safely and organizers thanked all who aided the celebration.

D B Lay Funeral Held Thursday at La Vernia Cemetery
Dan B. Lay 82 longtime Wilson county citizen died at San Antonio hospital June 29 1949 after a month long illness. Funeral religious rites were held at La Vernia Thursday with burial in La Vernia cemetery at 4 pm. He served as County Commissioner of Precinct 8 for years and was a respected pioneer resident.
