Kosciusko St Ann's Parish plans a large July Fourth event with barbecue supper and an all day program including political speeches in the afternoon, a baseball game at 8 pm against Robson, and a dance at night in the new auditorium. Committees organize for hundreds of visitors and a big time for all attendees.
The second annual Watermelon Jubilee at Stockdale last Friday and Saturday drew large crowds from across the state. A parade opened the festivities with Congressman Richard M. Kleberg as principal speaker, introduced by Senator Morris Roberts. The event included a noon chicken dinner and an afternoon rodeo with speakers including Gerald C. Mann and Coke Stevens. a coronation ceremony on the school campus drew a large attendance.
The Oaks School engages in elections and activities this season. Community members hear updates on school plans, with emphasis on student programs, faculty changes, and upcoming meetings at the district office and school campus.
Floresville and Poth business houses will close all day Monday July 4 as part of an annual holiday. A Kosciusko barbecue marks the celebration while many locals plan trips to the mountains coast and other fishing streams. Some will visit relatives in nearby towns for the vacation period.
Miss Marie Rosalia Skarke 74 died in Galveston and will be sent to Schulenburg for funeral services and interment. Survived by six brothers Otto Skarke Fritz A Skarke Hugo Skarke C Juenger Skarke C J Skarke and E W Skarke and one sister Mrs Emma Flocke several nieces nephews and relatives. Funeral attended by family and friends in Schulenburg.
The 14th District will convene at Falfurrias on Sunday July 8 with Joseph Holmes Post No 207 as host. State Commander Dr W J Danforth will be principal speaker at 9 30 am in the school building, public invited. The Ladies Auxiliary presiding officer is Mrs Thelma Lindholm. Business sessions begin at 10 30 am, with district commander election, then a barbecue at Legion Park.
A large crowd attended the barbecue held on the grounds of First Lutheran Church of Floresville on Thursday evening of last week, reflecting strong community turnout for the church event.
Lucille Goll wins county wardrobe demonstration and will compete at A and M College July 6 to 8 in the state wardrobe contest. Rosalie Schraub tops county canning with 272 of 300 and will advance to the state canning contest. Last year Lillian Koeether and Leona Schraub won county contests and earned district second place in San Antonio.
The United States Department of Agriculture reports 36,509,000 watermelons produced in the second early group, up from 36,504,900 last year. Alabama North Carolina and Texas show sharp gains as shipments run heavier than usual and the season runs about two weeks earlier. By June 11 3,977 cars moved to market versus 1,521 a year ago, and yields are expected to be higher overall. Acreage in late states is 68,300 acres, up from 66,240.
Wilson county reports total onion carloads 751 for the season with additional truck shipments still moving. Floresville led with 276 onion cars, Stockdale 238 across the period, and Watermelon commerce is reduced by late freeze. By Thursday total shipments stood at 115 cars, as Stockdale sent 70 and Floresville 45, with growers continuing to sell remaining yields.
Fort Worth attorney Karl A. Crowley, former U S Solicitor General, will address the Floresville district court room this Friday at 2:00 PM in support of his campaign for Texas governor. He tours the state to reach voters, inviting all to hear him, with special invitation to ladies.
Galveston Texas June 27 Ernest Thompson gubernatorial candidate urged a program to remove uncertainty in rural Texas school operation. He said the state has a equal obligation to educate children in rural districts and promised to push for rural school aid as governor.
The Floresville Agricultural Association will meet next Wednesday night July 6 at 7 o clock in the vocational agriculture room at the school. All members are urged to attend and visitors are welcome.
Mrs Sam Baird, 76, longtime resident of Wileon county and San Antonio native, died June 27 1938 at her home. She was buried in Stockdale after a Wednesday 10 a m funeral attended by a large crowd. Survived by husband Sam R Baird daughters Mrs W D Dennis Mrs Lee Mills Mrs L D Swift Mrs F F Dickey Mrs A J Bunn sons TSP and RW Baird.
Nine wardrobe demonstrators from Wilson County 4-H Clubs entered the wardrobe demonstration contest. Eight completed demonstrations and joined the canning and clothing contest with record books showing inventories, clothing items, and cloth-related details. Girls like Lucille Goll Mildred Kunkel Martha Stahl and Henrietta Schwertlich organized improved closets for their garments.
Charles H Wright died Monday in Eagle Pass from a heart attack. Six of his eight children and many relatives gathered Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Henson in Fairview for the first family reunion in years. About thirty seven people attended, with guests from Verdi San Antonio Robstown Verdi Galveston and San Marcos.
Floresville business people and citizens are invited to a Friday 8:00 PM band concert by the Floresville High School Band in the Wilson County courthouse district courtroom. A discussion on a fundraising barbecue to buy new band uniforms will follow, with parents of members and the public welcome.
John Clyde Oswald, 64, brother-in-law of Mrs. Elbert Franklin of Floresville, died in New York City on June 22 and was buried there. A noted publisher and journalism instructor at Columbia University, he served as past president of the National Editorial Association and led the National Arts Club. He formerly owned American Printer and authored several books. Survived by widow Virginia Bell Oswald and two children Elizabeth and J. P.. many friends offer sympathy.
Ernest O Thompson urged Texas industries soil conservation and old age pensions before 13500 supporters at Menard Park Galveston on Monday night He argued Texans should have shoes made in Texas by Texas labor and contrasted Texas industry with out of state shipments He pledged to attract 150 million dollars in new industry for Texas in 1939 if elected governor.
G Wright a 44 year old peace officer and sergeant in the U S customs patrol died suddenly at his home in Eagle Pass on Monday June 27 1988 around 9 o'clock from a heart attack. He had been mildly ill the day of his death but not seriously sick. His death shocked relatives and friends in Floresville where he spent his youth and to many in Texas where he served nearly twenty years as an officer. A short service was held at Eagle Pass on Wednesday afternoon at 4 39 conducted by Rev J H E Willmann of the Methodist church. The body was later brought to Floresville for religious services at the Floresville Methodist Church Thursday afternoon at 4 0 with Rev A O Foster assisting. Ministers praised his life as a soldier officer and citizen. A large mixed choir performed four selections. One of the largest floral offerings testified to the love of his friends from across the state. Pallbearers included Grover Webb Fl Paso Roy Hearn
Poth Catholics plan a major event honoring native son Rev. Alvin Otto Billimek, recently ordained. Solemn high mass at Blessed Sacrament Church at 9 a.m. will attract visiting priests and church leaders. Ern est O Thompson, governor candidate, speaks at 2 p.m. at Hermann Sons Hall, with Rep. Richard M. Kleberg attending. Large crowds from surrounding counties expected with special seating.
