Floresville Council meets amid recall, chamber changes in 2008
The Floresville City Council held its first 2008 meeting on January 24 with mayor Daniel M. Tejada and members Rudy G. Sanchez Johnnie Gomez and Gloria Martinez. They discussed recall election timing Ortiz and Sanchez terms expire May 10 2008 and a potential recall not possible until May 9 2009. The council approved a ¼ cent local sales tax reauthorization for street maintenance and repair and heard about changes to the Floresville Chamber of Commerce including a new Sanction Barbeque Cook-off and a revamped updatable website aimed to launch within three months. The next meeting is February 7.

Local Navy Sailor Receives Bronze Star for Iraq Service
Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew J. Demmer of the United States Navy received the Bronze Star on January 11 from Explosives Ordnance Disposal Commander Jeff McCauley. Demmer, a member of EOD Mobil Unit 6 Detachment 12, aided after a roadside bombing in Iraq, secured the scene, and gave first aid. His wife Nicole Jones attended. he is stationed in South Carolina and faces another Iraq tour this year. He is a 2003 Floresville High School graduate, son of Richard and Sherri Demmer, and grandson of John and Barbara Burleson and the late Albert and Johanna Demmer.

Mayor defends recall allegations and council actions
