Ten days into the fourth War Bond drive in Wilson County, only about $50,000 of a $220,000 goal has been reported. Officials stress urgency to meet the quota before the 16 days remaining, urging residents to buy bonds to support deployed soldiers and war needs.
Vague clipping notes Groenke, a veteran, arrived home and on a visit to his mother in Floresville. It mentions a rifle resembling a Springfield or overfield type, said to be a Japanese rifle captured at Tarawa, with service since November 16, 1942, though details are fragmentary.
Son of Mr and Mrs W D Hunter of Floresville receives the Distinguished Flying Cross in England. He served as a bomber pilot and completed 25 missions. The Floresville flyer earned commissions and wings at Foster Field Victoria Texas and is a former A and I College Kingsville student.
S W Crow 64 of 122 Montrose Ave San Antonio died Friday January 21 at M & 8 Hospital after a weeklong illness. Funeral services were held at Akers Funeral Home San Antonio Saturday at 3 PM with burial in Mission Burial Park. Rev B C Dunn presided. Born September 17 1879 in Fordsville Kentucky he moved from Wilson County to Reaville then to San Antonio in 1926 residing there 18 years. He married Anna Huston in Kentucky.
Bert Cameron and A J Richter will officiate at a Tenderfoot Scout Investiture to be held at Floresville high school auditorium on Wednesday February 9 at 8 pm. Jack Greene field scout executive of Alamo Area Council San Antonio will assist in the ceremony. All scouters committees and parents are urged to attend.
Woodroe Petty receives many Floresville friends as he enters the naval service after graduating in the class of 3 from A and M. The ceremony honored his commission as Ensign and reflected strong local support from friends and the community.
Mrs. Ottilie M. Wells dies in La Vernia following a long residence there. Funeral held at the Methodist church at 2 o clock Thursday with burial in La Vernia cemetery. Survived by sons Otto J. Wells and Richard M. Wells. daughters Mrs. A. L. Smith, Mrs. Josephine Shrieber, Mrs. Richard Purbis. six grandchildren. three great grandchildren. Community sympathy offered.
Over the past two weeks the Exar County Red Cross chapter delivered 225 kits to a Stinson Field group. Mrs. W. C. Guard and Mrs. J. M. Northrup accepted the first shipment. This week 65 kits were sent to a port of embarkation for soldiers heading overseas.
Wilson County Chapter of the American Red Cross arranges with Bexar County Blood Donor Center to deploy the mobile unit to Floresville within a 90 mile San Antonio radius. Donors can contribute blood locally for plasma use by armed forces, aiding wartime needs. Mrs. E F Woolsey Jr chairs the Blood Donor Service Committee, aiming for one pint per resident.
Mrs. Susie Neeley formerly of Floresville died at her Corpus Christi home at 68. Services were held at her son's house and Sacred Heart Church with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery. Survivors include three sons John, Joe, and George Neeley, and siblings in Floresville and Path. Funeral arrangements were by David T. Peel Funeral Home.
