L. Wildman resigns as public school system head to accept Kerrville superintendent position. The Kerrville post opened after Dr. H. A. Moore left, ending years of service there as the city’s schools seek new leadership.
The Floresville Independent School District board released Supt Wildman from his contract. Wildman, a Floresville native and Lions Club member, will depart with Mrs. Wildman and two children around February 1 for a new post after serving nearly four years guiding a district of about 50 teachers rated AA in athletics. A strong field of applicants is reported, with no successor named at press time.
Floresville Chamber of Commerce elects Zane Lawhon to again lead the festival with dates set for September 24 and 25. The group signed Donn Franklin Shows for carnival attractions and emphasized support for local 4-H and FFA livestock events and farm programs.
On Monday January 19 1948 the undersigned banks will close all day in observance of E. Lee's birthday. Patrons are asked to take note. First City National Bank Floresville and First National Bank Poth are among those closing.
The Floresville Cemetery Association met January 9 1948 at Mrs Eric Goeschs home. Members answering roll call included Lee Matlock Sr W C Bruff Jim McDaniel E F Wolsey Jr Sam Carr Henry Teltschik W M Butler J C Lane Eric Goesch A C Johnson Otto Johns W M se J C Merchant Visitors Fritz Nitschmann and Mrs Tom Wright. Minutes were read and approved and dues for 1948 were listed with numerous members paying dues and honoring the association.
A Florence Floresville Lutheran Church society report records donor Martha Voges, $10 gifts, and January February collections of $163.50 plus box sales $28.20. New members welcomed Mrs. Tom Wright, Mrs. Agnes Steinberg, Mrs. Clifford Ford, Mrs. Carl Eschenburg. Officers re elected: President Mrs. Lee Matlock Sr, Vice Presidents Kate McDaniel W H Mitchell W M Reese, Secretary J C Merchant, Treasurer J C Lane. Meeting venues listed through 1949 with deposits and cash on hand figures included.
F B Seale a well known Flores citizen is in Oxford Hospital in critical condition after a stroke suffered at his home late Thursday night or Friday morning. He had visited Lampasas with his son Campbell Seale and returned via San Marcos to see Mr and Mrs Lloyd Martin before returning home. His sons Roy E Seale of Beeville and Campbell Seale of Samapas and their wives and the Martins were with him during the week. Friends hope for early improvement.
San Marcos January 12 Thirty Wilson County pupils are among 1 700 enrolled at Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos Officials say the current term marks the largest long term enrollment in school history and will prompt a Greater College Building program A new women's dormitory and several smaller structures have already been added to the campus The Wilson County students include Jennings Adcock Betty Jo Cowan James W Spear and many others from Sutherland Springs Floresville Stockdale Path La Vernia and nearby areas
Shelled peanuts found a little stronger market this week with more active inquiry but light demand. Prices hovered around 16 1/2 cents a pound for No 1 Spanish. Some farmers stock peanuts moved to market at support prices though lots showed damage. peanut oil again showed strength.
W Q McCracken 61 longtime Wilson County native died Saturday after noon in Corpus Christi following a stroke. Funeral services were held at Church of the Good Shepherd with Rev William Garner officiating and burial plans set for cremation in San Antonio. Survived by two sons Bob and Dick McCracken of Corpus Christi, two sisters Miss Eoline McCracken Floresville and Miss Inez McCracken Dallas, and three grandchildren. The late county clerk and former court reporter had lived in Corpus Christi since 1926.
A community meeting at Sutherland Springs School gym tonight at 8 p.m. will bring together adults from Stockdale La Vernia and surrounding areas. Mr Beard head of the Equalization Board in Austin will attend the gathering urged for participation by all local residents.
The Women's Society of Christian Service of the Floresville Methodist Church sponsors a covered dish supper in the church basement next Tuesday night January 20 at 7 p.m. All church members are invited and urged to attend. each family should bring a covered dish for three or four people.
Fourteen year old Patricia Stephens, long a polio ward patient at Robert B. Green Hospital, is named the county March Girl. Her letter inspires the fundraising appeal which will send 10,000 letters to local residents next week with her picture on each.
Lee C. Shaw chief motor machinist's mate USN, son of George Seldtman of Floresville Texas, is serving aboard the submarine USS Ronquil based at San Diego California.
Floresville High Fighting Tigers, District 40-B champions, place five on the First Team and two on the Second Team. Honored first team members include Hengst, Carr, Matlock, Baker, and Dismuke with Eschenburg and Potts on the reserve squad. District 40-B includes Floresville, Pleasanton, Jourdanton, Poteet, Charlotte, George West, Three Rivers, and Petty.
Evangelist Ww. D Baker of Fort Worth opens an eight day revival at Sutherland Springs Baptist Church starting Sunday January 18. Services begin each evening at 7 00 with good singing and fellowship. A cordial invitation is extended to all to attend, bring friends and neighbors.
Wilson County Farm Bureau President I B Ray says the District 10 Farm Rally will be held at Seguin on Tuesday February 10. State President J Walter is named among the speakers on the program.
E. E. Peavy, who runs the official rain gauge in Floresville, reports that 1947 total rainfall amounted to 15.44 inches, far below the usual 29 inch average. Through early 1948, rainfall remains insufficient to record. The 1947 monthly breakdown follows.
