A New Year’s Eve fire at a theatre damaged film and a sound system. Firemen and citizens contained the blaze using water buckets before major loss. The theatre resumed operations Tuesday night. insurance covered about half the damage.

Charlie Staudt, a Floresville native and long time T. and N. C. railroad employee, is moved from Floresville to Kenedy to serve as cashier in the freight department. He began July 4, 1904, marking 85 years of continuous service. He becomes the oldest clerk in seniority in the Victoria division.
Mrs S B Carr of Floresville was named chair of a local unit of the National Consumers Tax Commission in Chicago. The non political drive aims to mobilize housewives nationwide against hidden and direct taxes that raise living costs. Texas leaders include Mrs Kenneth Frazier of Dallas as president and Mrs Volney W Taylor of Brownsville on the national committee.
More than 800000 Texas farmers and ranchmen who joined the AAA Conservation Program in 1938 will receive about 42000000 in payments, mostly in January through March 1939. George Slaughter said checks will begin as counties reach 25 percent applications, with 1938 total exceeding 1937 by about 9000000. Payments target cotton, wheat, rice and peanut farmers plus ranchers improving soil practices.
Rev. and Mrs. A. M. Foster attended the General Missionary Council of the Methodist Episcopal Church South held at Travis Park Church in San Antonio this week. The marriage of Doyle Stevens and Margaret George took place in Stockdale with Rev. W. E. Dechert officiating at the Methodist Church on Christmas Eve. The ceremony surprised many friends and the bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs L C George, a well known family.
Washington January 3. Representatives swamped House clerks with hundreds of legislative proposals today. Officials estimated opening day bills probably exceed 2000. Highlights include Kleberg Texas proposing to prohibit interstate shipment of adulterated oleomargarine and extend Commodity Exchange Act to wool futures. Summers Texas proposes changing presidential election time.
Wilson county officials were sworn in at a special commissioners court meeting for two years. County Judge W M Butler administered the oath to the county officials, commissioners, justices of the peace, and other elective officers. Only one or two precinct officers were unable to attend. One contested race existed in the July primary, others were re-elected without opposition.
Miss Fannie Sue Brasuel of Wilson County and Mrs Thomas Burger joined Miss Katherine Wiseman of San Antonio to attend the Sugar Bowl game in New Orleans between TCU and Carnegie Tech. Over 50,000 watched as the Horned Frogs won 15 to 7. John Connally of Floresville escorted Kerrville’s Josephine Schreiner, a Texas University representative.
Chas Zidek and his family visited relatives in Shiner last Sunday, sharing time with kin and enjoying a brief reunion in the town community.
