Mrs. E L Whitsett county chairm an for the Annual Roll Call of the Wilson County Chapter of the American Red Cross reports 282.76 in memberships and contributions. Schools and others contributed 15 756 toward a record county total as the drought hampered efforts. 1940 Cotton Acreage Allotments Reduced
The Agricultural Adjustment Administration announced 1940 state cotton planting allotments totaling 27,070,173 acres, down 472,842 from 1939. Each farmer shares a quota with penalties for sales above allotments. Texas alone totals 9,916,916 acres aiming at about 12 million bales.

Mrs Wyatt Smith Buried At Stockdale
Mrs. Wyatt Smith 80, grandmother of Mrs. T L Chance of Floresville, died January 1 1940 at her son J O Smith's San Antonio home. Funeral at Stockdale Methodist Church drew a large crowd. A Mississippi native, she lived in Stockdale over 50 years and was beloved by neighbors. Surviving daughters Hyman Stroud and Lea Wells. sons J O Smith Eugene Smith and King Smith. Memorial notices extend condolences to the family.

Cutting Affray Near Depot Here Saturday
Antonio Martinez, a farm laborer, was stabbed just above the heart in an affray near the depot last Saturday afternoon. He was treated at a local hospital and released, now at his sister's home. Antonio Torres was arrested and a complaint for aggravated assault was filed in county court.

Texas Children Asked to Aid Gonzales Warm Springs Center
Texas schools urged to collect ten cents from each pupil to fund construction of a Warm Springs convalescent and rehabilitation center near Gonzales. The Gonzales Warm Springs Foundation, nonprofit, sponsors the project on 40 acres with a board of 38 directors and thousands of contributors across Texas. The effort aims to aid about 20 000 disabled children statewide and educate youth on democratic obligations.

Cadet Burris Comes Home For Christmas Visit
Cadet Howard Burris Junior of the United States Military Academy at West Point spent the holidays with his parents in Sutherland Springs. He visited the Chronicle Journal editor last Friday and praised West Point while noting his year and a half of training and a ten week summer vacation ahead. He was recommended for appointment by Congressman Richard M. Kleberg after passing the entrance exam.

The South Texas Chamber of Commerce protested plans by San Antonio officials to install a river chlorination system and gates at Mitchell Lake to control pollution. Delays in funding delayed chlorinator installation while high lake levels and strong winds forced gate openings, risking dam breach. A Narrangansett turkey hen owned by E F Albert of Nicoy laid a large egg with an outer shell filled with fluid and a second egg inside it. The first egg weighed about half a pound. the hen’s eggs were described as sincere and normal by Albert.
