Indicted district judge candidate ends campaign
Richard Lee Garza withdraws from the 81st Judicial District race after a Wilson County Grand Jury indictment accusing him of three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Garza posted a $40,000 bond and was released. comments were not available at press time. The indictment cites March and April 2001 incidents involving a girl under 14.

Express-News Columnist's Premature Taxation Warning Draws Debate
Express-News columnist Roddy Stinson warned of potential new taxes in four counties including Wilson and Bexar as the SARA district weighs options for next year. Turner, a Floresville official, called the idea premature though some board members echoed concerns. Shooting leads to recovery of stolen vehicle
A San Antonio man was shot in the arm at a residence near La Vernia on January 26. Ernest Jimenez, 30, was airlifted to University Hospital after EMS transported him to Wilson Memorial Hospital. Ricardo Ramirez Jr., 39, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. A 1990 Cadillac reported stolen in December 2001 was recovered during the investigation and returned to its owner. Leticia Ramirez, Jimenez’s girlfriend and Ramirez’s cousin, faced public intoxication charges.

The UIL released the 2002 03 and 2003 04 realignment bulk, placing Floresville in 4 A with a shift to District 29 4A while Beeville Pleasanton remain with Floresville in 29 4A. New enrollment bands list 5 A 1910 plus 4 A 900 1909. Southside McCollum join 29 4A as South San Antonio drops from 28 5A. Travel within the new district should be short with all five schools within an hour.

A La Vernia man, Eleazar Rangel, is believed at large in Mexico with a warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after a 2:00 a.m. incident in Wilson County near La Vernia and Sutherland Springs. His mother Sonia Guzman was arrested for child abandonment for leaving two children alone and faces pending aiding and abetting charges.
