Popcorn Team Drives Push for New Members

Bad weather and hindrances delayed a closing date for a campaign. Captain Henry Boening and Lieutenant E Lohse lead the Popcorn Team as members are urged to join. The winged roster includes Tackitt Reese Bundrick Lu Spruce Connally Thompson Franklin and Rosa Dewees among others as efforts resume with a banquet planned.

Wilson County Cotton Ginnings Announced

The latest government report shows Wilson County gins produced 6,627 bales before December 18, 1987, up from 3,140 bales the prior year. Start of Texas totals reached 4,625,760 for 1987, versus 2,752,426 in 1986, with Lubbock County leading the state at 131,208 bales.

Floresville High School football figures receive sweaters

Just before Christmas Floresville High School awarded sweaters to the football squad who had earned letters. Elmo Wright Sr. presented the awards at special exercises, praising the team’s season, sportsmanship and fighting spirit. Also honored were the business manager, yell leaders, and sponsor Miss Opal Goodwin. Sweaters from A G Spaulding Company were dark maroon with white chenille letters and service stripes.

Mrs. C. T. Roemer Successful Hunter in Sand Hills

Mrs. C. T. Roemer wife of a Labatt area farmer shot a five point buck during the holidays north of their farm. It was her first deer and one of the few times she fired a rifle. She hunted with her husband while Charlie Roemer, a veteran hunter, did not bag a deer.

Camp Adjutant Mr and Mrs Seve day along with Lieut C C handing officer hosted a Christmas dinner at CCC Camp Enjoys Wonderful Christmas Dinner After Making Others Happy. Enrollees and officers helped brighten the event and spread cheer.

Floresville and county schools reopen Monday after holidays

The Floresville schools and schools across the county will open next Monday morning January 3 following the Christmas holidays. Many teachers were away for the holidays, and college students home for Christmas will resume studies Monday morning.

Emma Bowie Funeral Held After Death in San Antonio

Mrs. Emma Bowie Tressie Bowie age 67 years 11 days died at her San Antonio home Monday December 27 1987 at 1125 p.m. Burial occurred Tuesday at Floresville Cemetery following services at the Baptist Church led by Rev W A Smith pastor of Cleveland Texas Deceased born December 16 1870 in Hamburg Arkansas to Mr and Mrs Ben W She moved to Wilson County in 1890 and married John Waite Lee on December 24 1892 in Wilson County Texas

Home Demonstration Work in Wilson County 1937

Extension effort through Home Demonstration Clubs and the County Council guided a "live at home" program. About 3062 participants planned Year Book activities, with gardens supplying vegetables and canning knowledge. Total canned produce valued at $10,071.48, plus brined vegetables, jams, meats, and dried goods. Bedroom improvement efforts engaged 86 women, with multiple rooms updated and achievement day programs held.

State Health Department Exhibit to Visit Floresville

The State Health Department trailer exhibit will visit Floresville on January 6 featuring posters on maternal and child health. A public health nurse will discuss materials with senior high school girls and women of child bearing age, followed by health films for students. The event runs 3:30 to 5:00 PM and joint sponsorship by PTA and Legion Auxiliary is urged.

Poth Christmas Tree Program Is A Community Hit

The Poth Christmas tree, lit and sponsored by local business men, drew hundreds of townsfolk for a schoolchildren program on Christmas Eve. Santa distributed gifts. the event received praise from neighbors and a public vote of thanks to all who participated.

Agricultural Association Meets on January 6 Floresville meeting set for 7 30 p m at courthouse Floresville members urged to attend and new year push to enroll more members

The Floresville Agricultural Association announces its regular meeting for Wednesday January 6 at 7 30 p m in the Floresville courthouse. Rainy weather and holidays disrupted the membership contest so it will resume next month. Members urged to join the Texas Agricultural Association and recruit new members statewide.

Annual County Agent Report Details 1937 Activities

The Wilson county annual report for 1937 by County Agent C. W. Thompson shows extensive county work. It covers A A Storey Jr January 1 to February 22 and O W Thompson February 22 to December 31. The office handled about 10 000 farmer office calls and 3000 telephone calls. The agent led or attended 172 meetings with 2100 farmers, including 4 H Club boys and demonstrations, training, and committee meetings for the Agricultural Conservation Program. The conservation program consumed most time with 64 days devoted. 1251 work sheets were filed in Wilson county.

Rain Totals Rise in Wilson County for December 1937

Wilson County records show steady rain as the new year begins. Officially 5.46 inches had fallen by last week, with 2.20 inches more by Tuesday night, bringing December totals to 7.66 inches with light rain continuing into Wednesday morning.

North Little Rock Mayor Visits Old Home Town

North Little Rock mayor Ross L. Lawhon with wife and daughter Dorothy returned to his boyhood town for a few hours of old friends and scenes. They had Christmas in San Antonio with brother Will Allen Lawhon’s family, alongside Irene Worsham of Dallas. Lawhon had resigned as postmaster to lead his city again, praising how well the world treats him.

Spruce Attends Water Improvement Short Course

L F Spruce, long time San Antonio Public Service Company manager for Floresville water pumping, attended a Cuero Short Course on water works, sanitation, and pollution control. He notes the need for sterilization measures and chlorine use to keep Floresville water pure, and aims to share knowledge with local plumbing and city staff.

Christmas Midnight Mass at Sacred Heart Church Floresville

Christmas of 1937 is remembered by Sacred Heart parishioners in Floresville for a solemn Midnight Mass celebrated by Very Rev. P. P. Zarb with the generous support of choral children and ushers J. T. Sheehy and E. F. Ullmann. The spacious church was full and the faithful showed reverent devotion as peace prevailed.
