The Wilson County paper thanks subscribers and businesses for fifty years of loyalty and support. It expresses appreciation for the county’s confidence and invites a New Year of greater opportunity and service to the community, urging readers to seize the golden chances of the year.
The RB L Eschenburg Store was entered last Saturday night Christmas Eve. The intruder battered the cash register and took about $15, leaving little else. Entrance was through an icy light over the office. escape occurred via a side window. Co A Moehrig store at Black Ann also robbed that night. Four Pleasanton stores were entered during the holidays, prompting merchants to heighten vigilance.
Senior Epworth League members of the Methodist Church visited Floresville homes on Christmas Eve to sing carols for shut ins and elderly residents. About a dozen homes were visited with warm greetings, drawing appreciation from grateful families, including Tom Finto and wife visiting his parents in the Fairview area.
County Agent E D Beck urges stockmen and farmers to attend the livestock short course at Texas A and M College January 9 to 13. The extension service and animal husbandry department, with the Texas agricultural experiment station, will present beef cattle hogs and sheep and goats divisions with lectures daily. This is the first such course at the college in several years and aims to deepen understanding of industry problems for livestock farmers and ranchers planning diversification.
Floresville man reports a three month stay across the Rio Grande Valley noting rapid immigration and a building boom. He cites extensive citrus cultivation, thriving orchards, and high per acre earnings from grapefruit ventures in McAllen Mission Donna and nearby towns. He lists several yields and values while contrasting with other fruits. Mr. Hyde and J G Youngblood also mentioned.
Prominent Floresville groom Stephen Wiley Seale and Miss Gladys Elizabeth Flamson were married last Friday at the home of Rev. Jas W Allbritten in Gonzales. The couple, guests including family, left for Grandview to spend Christmas with the bride’s parents. The bride, UT graduate with MA from Columbia, teaches home economics at Southwest Texas State Teachers College San Marcos. Seale, Floresville native, is Gonzales High School principal and a respected local figure.
District Judge Murray, currently visiting with family, will begin the year by opening his first term of court at Karnes City next Tuesday morning, January 3.
J Reding aged 74 once a local merchant was buried in Stockdale Texas after funeral services led by Rev Kidwell pastor of the Methodist Church with Masons as pallbearers. Heis survived by a widow in San Antonio two sons two daughters and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Fort Worth Texas December 27 More than 100 letters have been issued by Dr T Simons secretary of the Texas Jersey Cattle Club inviting county agents and county agricultural club members to attend the annual meeting at the Adolphus Hotel Dallas January 4 and 5 Speakers will include representatives of the American Jersey Cattle Club.
A man was shot accidentally in Campbellton Texas on December 2. He was rushed to a San Antonio hospital. W H Holcombe cashier of the First State Bank of Rankin and Mrs Holcombe were visiting relatives over Christmas with his parents W M Holcombe and wife.
Much needed rain blessed Floresville and nearby locality during the holidays. Total rainfall measured 1.54 inches and was reported general across the county. Farmers expect plowing to resume with the new year as prospects remain encouraging despite ongoing dry spell.
Floresville business houses will close all day Monday January 2 in observance of New Year's Day. Since New Year's Day falls on Sunday the holiday is observed Monday as customary. Merchants plan to wind up stock on this day and resume normal operations Tuesday.
The Board of Stewards of the Methodist Church will meet next Monday night January 2 at Dr. J W Oxford's home. Hosts Dr Oxford and E D Beck will entertain after the business session. Many Floresville residents attended the funeral of Bernhard Ortmann at Dewees cemetery Monday afternoon. Ortmann, 36, died Saturday after a brief illness and was highly esteemed. Attendees said it was among the largest funerals in the county area, and the paper extends sympathy to the family.
