Floresville Band Hosts Christmas Banquet With Uncle Fritz

Floresville School Band and about 60 guests enjoyed a Sunday Christmas banquet at the White House Cafe. Host Fritz Teltschik led a festive evening with decorated tables, a tree, and a multi-course meal. Speakers lauded the band’s 21-year tradition, leadership, and loyalty to the community and director.

Tigers Take Second in District 28-AA Under Ralph Starnes

Floresville Tigers finished 1958 as district runners up in 28-AA, losing only to Goliad by two points. Goliad defeated Karnes City Pleasanton East Central and Northside. Four Tigers earned All-District First team honors Jack Garrahan Rudy Ortiz Louis Sanchez and Chris Kuykendall who scored 134 points one of the state's best. The listed squad includes coach Starnes co captains Kuykendall and Sanchez and players like Burt Fuller Ted Barber Pete Svoboda and Jackie Garrahan with Mgrs Carvajal and Caro.

4-H Christmas Party Draws 175 In Poth

The annual 4-H Christmas party in Poth attracted about 175 members, parents, and friends. Since 1955 the event has been run by 4-H members with Marvin Rudolph as MC. Game leaders included Edward Kasprczyk, Albert Lemke, Billy Wayne Jarutowicz, Wayne Carr, Wilfred Lowak, Albin Lamza, Jack Orts, Carolyn Taylor, and Lorene Lamza. An $18.90 donation was raised for CARE and Muscular Dystrophy. Cookies and soda ended the party at 9:30.

Wilson County Exceeds Savings Bond Quota for 1958

Wilson County reports 11 months totals of 206 020 dollars in Series E and H bonds and November sales of 9 816 dollars, exceeding 1958 goal at 110 2 percent with December not counted. Texas sales reach 157 643 dollars, about 90 percent of state target.

Pete Aranda Dies After Knife Attack Near Dance Hall

Pete Aranda, 18, of Fairview, was stabbed in the stomach and cut on the forehead in a Saturday night affray near Ximenez Dance Hall by Loop 181. He died Sunday afternoon. Brother Raymundo Aranda was cut but not seriously hurt. Mariano Pena, about 27, faces murder charges in Justice court. Pena was also wounded and receiving care at home in Floresville. Rosary and burial were held for Aranda, with funeral services at Palacios Funeral Home.

Cobb Buried in Nixon After San Antonio Death

T C Cobb of Nixon died Monday in San Antonio. Funeral services were Thursday at Nixon Methodist Church with burial in Nixon Cemetery. He formerly taught as Vocational Agriculture instructor in Nixon. Survived by widow Leona Ford Cobb, two sons and a daughter.

Wilson County to See $27 000 Highway Improvements in 1959

Texas Highway Department allocates 27000 to Wilson County for 1959 road work including seal coats and shoulder widening. F M Davis notes work to begin after preliminary steps with Gene Koch supervising. Projects cover U S Hwy 87 from Stockdale area to Gonzales and US Hwy 181 seal coat from Karnes County line area.

Texas Crops In 1958 Exceed 1957 Totals

National crop output hit a record 118 percent of the 1947-49 average. Texas reports include corn on 1,754,000 harvested acres yielding 24.5 bushels per acre for 42,973,000 bushels and winter wheat on 3,320,000 acres yielding 22 bushels per acre for 73,441,000 bushels, up from 1957. Funeral services Wednesday for Mrs. J. W. Oxford

Mrs Lorena McDaniel Oxford 69 died at her Floresville home after months of illness. Funeral held at Floresville Methodist Church with heavy attendance. Survivors include husband Dr J W Oxford and two sons Lt Col James William Oxford in France and Dr Brad Oxford of San Antonio. A Floresville burial followed in Floresville Cemetery. Six Pan American College soils students and professors completed a South Texas field trip visiting local farms and the Luling Foundation, with E L Spaniel Wilson County agent and John Haschke presenting livestock and crop integration practices.
