Six year old girl killed crossing highway near Stockdale

A six year old girl died Tuesday night after being struck by a truck driven by Anson Cone while attempting to cross the highway near Stockdale. The driver and family offered aid and were cleared of blame by the child’s parents, Mr and Mrs Floyd Brigmon, according to Nixon News.

San Patricio County Plans New Roads

San Patricio County Court has hired W. J. Kelly of Hondo as engineer for a 1.5 million dollar county road project. Work slated to begin in February under County Judge L. C. Ivey. The court also bought 22 road machines and vehicles including trucks and pickups. Existing roads needing repairs will be addressed first as the project starts.

William J. Schroeder Sr. Dies in Fredericksburg at 65

William J. Schroeder Sr., 65, prominent Fredericksburg merchant and civic leader, died Sunday after a long illness. A Floresville native, he founded Schroeder Bros. Store in 1920, helped found Fredericksburg National Bank in 1932, and served as cashier and vice president. Survived by wife Emma Korges, two sons, a granddaughter, his mother, a sister, and a brother. Funeral Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church with burial in City Cemetery.

Floresville Band Delights With Magnificent Christmas Concert

Floresville residents praised the 45 piece Floresville School Band directed by Fritz Teltschik after a memorable Christmas program. The annual concert featured sacred pieces, special numbers, stage lighting, and a comedy skit by high school seniors. The band earned first in the Cuero Turkey Trot and received enthusiastic audience applause.

Monogrammed Egg For Our Christmas Gift

Sutherland Springs School Destroyed By Fire On Eve Of Holidays

Fire destroyed the Sutherland Springs public school on December 19, a frame 8 room building valued around 40 000 dollars. Janitor Arthur Sellers discovered flames at 7 55 a m and efforts by nearby residents and Stockdale fire brigade failed to save the structure. The gym escaped with minor damage and trustees planned after holiday arrangements, including possible use of churches or the gym as classes resume.

Floresville Tigers Take Runner-Up in Stockdale Tourney

Floresville reached the Stockdale tournament final after beating Poth 18 to 7 and Stockdale 34 to 32 in a tense semifinal. Prairie Lea edged Floresville 35 to 17 to capture the title while Schertz Cibolo placed third and Smiley finished in consolation. Floresville will host home games on the Path Court at Hermann Sons Hall Gym.

Census Bureau data show cotton ginners for the 1947 crop prior to December 13 totalled 10,596,350 bales, up from 7,782,862 on the same date in 1946. The 1947 count includes 959 bales American-Egyptian and 20 bales Sea Island.

Two Loads Stock Set New Record in Chicago Market

CHICAGO, Dec. 20. Two loads of Kansas cattle established an all time price record at the Chicago livestock market this week. Forty seven Hereford steers marketed by Corpstein Brothers of Nortonville in Jefferson County brought 39 dollars per hundredweight. Averaging 1094 pounds per head, the two loads sold for 42666 dollars per head or 20053 dollars for the two carloads.

The San Antonio Social Security Office reports 1.8 million beneficiaries nationwide receiving over 35 million monthly under old age and survivors insurance. In this Southwest Texas field area 25 counties show 4,708 retired workers paid monthly benefits totaling 77,802.
