Governor Coke Stevenson salutes Texas servicemen in a Christmas message praising their valor and sacrifices. He asks Texans to support war efforts, pledges 1944 home-front aid, and expresses hope for a swift victory and safe return for all fighting men and their families.
In Jesville the annual Christmas caroling event lit up the high school auditorium with about 50 youths performing. Directors Fritz and others led the group as they visited two hospitals and local homes, spreading holiday cheer with traditional carols.
A Sunday turkey dinner was given in honor of Alvin Matheaus, age 81, with Mr. and Mrs. Chas Math and Miss Alsads Belek among those noted, including Arnold Matheaus and other relatives.
Randolph Field Texas sweeps up for a New Year game against Dana Bible's Texas Longhorns with Cpl Dan Wright a top ball carrier. Wright a Floresville high two year letterman, versatile backfield reserve, serves as business machine operator with the Fifth Statistical Unit at the Central Instructors' School. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Elmo Wright of Floresville.
S-Sgt Lupe G Sanchez, son of E R Sanchez and wife of Floresville, received official War Department notice that he was prisoner of war in a German camp. The family believes capture occurred in Italy, where they last heard from him. He grew up in Floresville, attended Floresville High School, and worked at I D Flores drug store.
Mr and Mrs Mitchell Hayden entertained with a venison barbecue on December 19 to honor Mrs Hayden's brother Alfred Bell and family from Pennsylvania. The Hayden's long held a July 4 gathering but this year attendance was limited and the barbecue was postponed. Relatives enjoyed venison barbecue potato salad lettuce olives pickles fruit cake and coffee with Christmas candies and looked to next year for another gathering.
Senator Fred Mauritz and his sister Miss Jennie Mauritz of Canado paused in Floresville on Tuesday afternoon while en route home from San Antonio. He expressed regrets at not staying longer with Wilson county friends and sent Christmas greetings and wishes for a happy prosperous new year.
Mr and Mrs Bill McGee and their daughter Billie Ann have lived in lovesville. They tested last Saturday for Bridgeport Texas to spend the holidays with relatives. Sgt Eugene Sanchez returns from active combat in the Southwest Pacific with the Fighting U S Marines to visit his parents E R Sanchez and wife. His brother S Sgt Guadalupe Sanchez, recently reported a German prisoner of war, is also noted. He spent several days in Houston with friends before resuming duties after Christmas.
The Floresville school band was honored with a Monday night banquet at the White House Cafe hosted by band director Fritz Teltschik. Rev. Fred Drees gave the invocation as members and guests enjoyed a Christmas themed dinner. Various speakers praised the band’s work and wished a Merry Christmas, with former members noted among the group.
President Roosevelt will give a Christmas Eve address from Hyde Park at 2:00 p m. The speech will be broadcast globally and reach nations around the world.
A San Antonio Express photo features Marines Pfc. Frank Rogers of San Antonio Pfc. Juan Garza of Floresville and Pfc. Karl Oldham of Kerrville on a volcanic island under Japanese air raids. Garza, son of Refugio Garza and raised in Floresville, garners local pride as the town congratulates him and the others.
Otto H. Reininger dies at age 68 in Three Oaks after illness. Born August 25 1875 near New Braunfels Texas, he married Emma C Uhr in 1897 and lived on Dewees ranch before moving to Three Oaks in 1910. Survived by widow, three children Elsa Koether Alvina Koether Oscar Reininger, six brothers and many relatives. Funeral held December 16 at Three Oaks Church conducted by Rev Carl Bunkle.
The Elite Cafe and Confectionery changed hands this week, with Tolbert Parrott and wife passing ownership to Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Dismukes. The new owners have long community ties and will continue to operate in the Houston and Greens building offering home cooked meals short orders and cold drinks.
Wilson county residents filled the auditorium for a Christmas Victory Band Concert honoring nearly 1200 service members. The two hour program raised 21400 in war bonds and 270 in war savings stamps, with Director Fritz Teltschik and Miss Geraldine Lane leading a starry display and community pride. Chaplain J Stuart Pearce of Fort Sam Houston gave a patriotic address recalling local pioneer roots and paying tribute to the soldiers serving away from home.
The Christmas program and tree, provided by the Methodist Church young people, filled the church basement last Sunday evening. Directed by Mrs. Hugh W Wise man and assisted by department teachers, the event featured caroling, family and shepherd scenes, a manger scene, and segments on Christmas origins and the American tradition with participation from nursery to junior groups. Melvin Wwann Church introduced the program.
