Funeral Honors For Longtime Wilson Karnes Politician
Former County Judge Verner M Butler of Floresville died Saturday December 12 1959 at his home aged 73 He was a key figure in Wilson and Karnes counties serving in the Texas Legislature and as Wilson County Judge He married Mary Timberlake in 1910 and was widely respected for his integrity and public service Funeral services were held Monday at the Floresville Memorial Hospital funeral home chapel with burial in Floresville Cemetery.

Farmer voters nationwide backed both cotton and peanut referendums. Wilson County reported Cotton 83 For 25 Against and Peanuts 221 For 81 Against. Atascosa County showed Peanuts 190 For and 19 Against. Cotton also carried there though exact totals were not known.

River Group Gets Application Okay Calaveras Shed
In Austin the State Water Board by a divided vote granted the San Antonio River Authority and ten landowners a permit to increase water impounded in a Parita Creek soil conservation service reservoir within Calaveras Creek experimental watershed. The permit runs 20 years with annual water use up to 40 acre feet for livestock.

Poth Mires Men's Club hosts a free Christmas event with $60 in four $5 and $20 prizes, sign up at Maeckel Building. Santa rides in on a fire truck, then distributes fruit and candy bags to every child in town. Attendance prizes of $5 will be given hourly at 2, 3, 4, and 5 pm, with events on December 19 and December 24 drawing a large crowd.

Floresville's Chamber of Commerce staged its greatest Trades Day on December 12 1959 attracting 1500 to 2500 attendees with estimates up to 2500. The event featured 30 free turkeys given by 30 firms from 8 am to 2 pm and a 175 prize attendance award. Registrations ranged from 100 to over 500 at various stores, with 108 registrants at the Chronicle Journal office. The mayor praised the Chamber and thanked participants for hospital and construction support. Winners list to appear next week.
