Floresville council member cites broken water meters losses
Floresville officials say meters not repaired or replaced since 2003 caused hundreds of thousands in potential revenue losses though others estimate under 14,249. About 92 meters showed zero consumption in July and January 2006, with some meters running backward. City crews cite a January software rollout as causing tracking problems.

Copper theft rises as AC units targeted countywide
Copper prices and thefts climb, with four to five similar incidents in five months. A vacant building near Floresville City Hall lost copper wire from an AC unit over the weekend. Detective Chad Clarke says commercial AC units draw theft due to high copper content. Countywide, recycling facilities require ID only for shipments over 30 pounds. copper prices at Ashley Salvage in San Antonio show clean copper at 2.55 per pound and used copper at 1.75 per pound. Clarke notes suspects are hard to track and says leads are being pursued.

Former student earns high school diploma after 39 years
Manuel Mermea Jr received his Floresville high school diploma 39 years after senior year, due to a WWII Korea Vietnam military service eligibility rule. He learned of the option via a VFW newsletter, applied, and, after three months, was honored to receive the diploma dated May 27, 1967. He recalled hardship, choosing the Army over a class disruption, hoping to become a paratrooper. The ceremony occurred July 18.
