The Exemption Board reports the first draft call will occur next week. Wilson county must provide 5 percent of its 19-person quota, equaling one man. The selected draftee must be ready to report when notified. refusal would be deemed desertion.
W M West of Floresville notes the departure of attorney J A King after three years in the town. King, described as a self made man and ambitious, carries readers’ best wishes as he relocates to Browns ville and Brownsville.
Wilson county voters backed a special 30 cent school tax at a local election with 21 for and only one against. The levy will apply to this year’s costs, reflecting strong community support for better schools. Merchant Lewis reports good prices while Mr. and Mrs. Spruce celebrate a 10 pound girl born last Monday night. Miss Mattie Myers spent a day or two in San Antonio recently.
Work has begun on Floresville’s new city hall after weeks of delay. Stephenson and Lillie of Floresville secured a $7500 contract, signed with architect Ralph H. Cameron of San Antonio. Excavation is under way for a two story brick building with store space on the lower floor and council chamber tax collector’s office and assembly hall on the upper floor. First term of court in new district opens Monday at Pearsall.
Springs with his son recalls old Floresville days. Judge Morris heads to Pearsall for the first term of the 81st district court with Covey Thomas presiding for the first time. Sheriff Houston’s old jail era rises in memory as Morris recounts a guard stint and a prisoner poem. Also notes Wilson County cotton and corn failures for the first time in 49 years. The special constitutional amendment failed to carry in Wilson county with only 16 of 27 precincts voting. Kosciusko box, usually around 100 votes, produced the largest tally at 42 to 1 against Floresville, while the county overall showed little interest.
A large appearing rain event proved localized last Tuesday afternoon. Heavy downpour accompanied by wind and a sandstorm drenched Sunnyside and nearby zones. Rain began east of here, extending into the Nixon country with notable showers on the Mc Daniel ranch area and along the Cibolo. Stockdale also reported a fair rain.
High broom corn prices from 300 to 350 dollars per ton spur farmers along the Texas coast between Nueces and Rio Grande to plant heavily. A Pharr Valley farmer grew 37 acres to yield five eighths of a ton per acre and earned 312 dollars per ton totaling 6,015 dollars. The Rio Grande Valley twill pay an estimated 2,000,000 dollars to farmers for their 1917 broom corn planting, with December 15 highlighted and only light rain needed to secure a crop.
Rev. W. H. Price, associational missionary for the San Antonio Baptist Association, will preach at the Floresville Baptist church next Sunday morning and evening. An invitation is extended to all to attend the services.

General Crowder acting on President Wilsons initiative has amended the draft to exempt married men who would be forced to leave home to work or rely on others for support. The ruling aims to ensure a husband cannot be drafted if he has a wife dependent on him for sustenance.
