A fire in Floresville damaged a cotton house early Tuesday destroying about 493 bales of cotton. Floresville Fire Department fought the blaze but origin remains undetermined as residents react with concern.
P. Leverett, named by District Judge W O Murray as official court reporter for the 81st district, arrived with his wife and mother to Floresville. They reside at J S McKenzies and plan to establish their home there. Leverett formerly served as assistant court reporter in Dallas County. The stenographer left Monday for Pearsall for the district court opening.
Wilson County faces a combined tax rate of 1.48 dollars per hundred as state rate rises 4 cents to 68, county rate stays at 80 cents. Tax assessor J. T. Sheehy notes delays in rolling out rates while state board announced prime rate last Saturday and officials completed tax rolls.
Elmer Mills eighteen-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Mills died at Oxford and Archer Hospital after a fall at work on his father’s farm. He suffered internal injuries with later complications and was in critical condition. Funeral services were held at Harper cemetery in Sunnyside community, with many friends in attendance.
Lloyd Bell, pioneer poultryman of Smiley, a leading merchant, spent Wednesday in Floresville on business. In about 15 years he built one of the largest Southwest Texas hatcheries with two farms housing 10,000 White Leghorns, a 52,000 egg incubator, and last year hatched about 150,000 chicks and 50,000 turkeys. He praises Wilson County and the local poultrymen for progress and a bright regional future.
W. J. Schroeder a former local resident with County Agent Grote and three Free Chamber of Commerce representatives visited Floresville on Tuesday. They bought two registered Jersey cows to be awarded as prizes at Fredericksburg Trades Days to be held soon. This marks the second Jersey shipment from Floresville to Fredericksburg in recent months.
United Gas Company, parent Moody-Seagraves Co and Mission Drilling Company subsidiary, prepares to lay gas pipelines through Louisiana and Mississippi to serve all major coastal gas fields. The move ties together United Gas with Mission Drilling and other interests as it expands its network.
Fire swept the Nixon residence of Mrs. M. J. Johnson this morning. The 80 plus resident, seriously ill, and her brother Marshal Carter lived there. most of the household goods were saved after the oil stove started the fire.
Carl Johnson owner of the Arcadia Theatre and Pierce Petroleum representative suffered a painful injury Monday when a sliver of steel penetrated his right eyeball while removing a plug from a gasoline storage tank near the depot. He was treated by a San Antonio specialist Tuesday and is improving. the injury is not expected to be serious.
Wilson County Day highlighted at the Atascosa County Fair in Pleasanton with Old Settlers Day and a Floresville Chamber motorcade leaving the courthouse square at 9 30 AM. Secretary BE C Wells in charge of arrangements and invites a good crowd from neighboring counties. Wilson County Fair stickers available for cars.
District Judge W O Murray began his first fall term at Pearsall after a vacation period spent with his family here. The move marks the start of court sessions following a summer recess.
The community extends sincere sympathy to Mrs. W. A. Epperson of the Black section on the death of her mother Mrs. F. E. McClure in Aztec Mexico several days ago. Born in Virginia with English ancestry she was a niece of the late Senator Francis Marion Cockrill of Missouri. During World War I she chaired the Red Cross at her home city and she raised four children while managing many duties.
The Floresville Band with over 15 musicians supplied music for the first two days of the Atascosa County Fair at Pleasant. Citizens praised the band as a feature of the entertainment. Mer Teltschik and band plan for the Wilson County Fair October 23 to 26 and will perform all four days.
Up to 20 clock Thursday afternoon the Floresville gins reported 1498 bales this season and the Floresville Cotton Warehouse had 2204 bales in. Soa Vista Gin logged 804 bales while Eschenburg Schneider Gin Co at Dewees delivered 1088 bales.
Mrs Birdie J Easterling of Del Rio Grand Matron of the Grand Eastern Star Chapter of Texas spent Thursday morning here with Mrs Easterling's aunt Mrs Weal Scott. She had been to Beeville to pay an official visit to the Beeville Chapter and was accompanied by Mrs Mattie Murray Mitchell of San Antonio District Deputy Grand Matron of this district.
Willie Sanders, resident of the For sythe place south of Floresville, was seriously hurt Tuesday afternoon while operating a feed mill with his brothers. His left arm was broken in three places and his face sustained severe injuries after becoming entangled in a belt. He was taken to Oxford & Archer Hospital for treatment and is improving.
I. T. Ray, county tick inspector, and Mrs. Ray returned Tuesday from several weeks in Rochester Minnesota. Mr. Ray underwent a serious Mayo operation and his wife was treated there as well. Both are reported improving.
Reese and Houston, Magnolia Company agents, received a new blue Magnolia tank truck for agency deliveries. The 365 gallon vehicle can carry gasoline, kerosene, and oils simultaneously. Miss Helen Livingood, guest of Miss Lillie Blake, returned to Houston last Sunday.
Floresville Public School opens Monday morning at the high school auditorium for the opening session. Special examinations are to be given Friday September 6. A library fee is mentioned by the high school.
In Floresville Baptist gathering crowds presented gifts to the departing pastor and his family. Rev Archer praised their service. households were packed with linen and clothing as thanks poured in. The event ended with joyful farewells as friends dispersed.
The Methodist Missionary Society met with Mrs. R. C. Teas then outlined the Floresville Public Schools opening on Monday September 9 with a 9 am program in the high school auditorium. Examinations for summer work and failed subjects are scheduled for Friday September 6. Library fees are urged for high and intermediate students to maintain library standards. The school board allows unders to attend Floresville schools if primary is not overcrowded.
Mrs Will Wiseman of La Vernia spent a short visit here Monday morning as the guest of Mrs John Wiseman.
