Governor Urges Safest September In Texas History

Governor Daniel calls for Back To School Safety Week and Labor Day traffic safety drive across Texas. Kiwanis clubs, Dairy Institute of Texas, TAB and 800 dairy firms join in a month long Crusade Child Safety with 6,000 vehicles and 5,000 salesmen distributing safety tags and messages to millions of homes. The program aims to cut Labor Day traffic deaths and mirrors a 13 percent drop in Texas deaths this year versus 1957, as nationwide deaths fall 7 percent.

United Gas seeks first Floresville rate rise in nine years

United Gas Corporation has filed for a rate increase in Floresville to gain a fair return on its gas distribution system. The request, echoed by A E Johnson, notes 1957 costs eroded returns. average residential bills would rise by under 1.78 dollars monthly. The company has served Floresville since 1929, with current rates in effect since 1949. The Floresville council will consider the petition at its next meeting.

Wilson County Bond Sales July 1958 Report

BE. J. Woolsey Jr chairman of Wilson County Bond Committee announced July 1958 sales of 16419 dollars. He noted the county has reached 58.3 percent of the 1958 goal of 187000 dollars and Texas seven month savings total reached 103806066 dollars, up 3.9 percent from 1957.

Methodist Men In Monthly Meeting Ham Supper Report

Floresville Methodist Men met in the church recreation room with 19 members present. A ham supper was served by Zane Lawhon Morris Johnson and Gene Koch. President Carroll Buchhorn led the meeting. Edward Reed spoke on the Wilson County CROP program and Pastor Riley outlined church programs. The group voted to help coordinate a large attendance from the church for the opening of the remodeled Travis Park Church in San Antonio on Sunday September 6 at 7:30.

498 Head Stock Sold Tuesday at Floresville Auction

Floresville Tuesday auction sales reached one of the heaviest totals in months with 498 head of livestock sold by Floresville Livestock Commission Company. Buying was lively from neighbors and distant areas as cattle prices rose 50 cents to $1 in all classes. Butcher hogs fell, feeders declined, while sheep and horses held steady. owner W. J. The listing shows bid and offer ranges for cattle and calves including fat calves 24.50 to 26.80 per hundredweight, stockers 19.50 to 25.30, baby calves 4.00 to 38.00, fat cows 17.00 to 18.60, canners 12.00 to 16.50, stocker and cow values from 14.90 to 17.40 and 88.00 to 119.00 for stocker cows, cows and calves 120.00 to 206.00, with bulls bid from 1700 to 24.30 and 33.9 to 21.10 for heavies.

Hearing requested to exempt Wilson County from herbicide law

Heavy Peanut and Corn Shipments From Wilson County

Wilson County in Southwest Texas shifts to heavy shipments of Spanish peanuts and corn. Farmers report better corn yields than many years, but late peanuts and grasses need rainfall. Floresville ships dry peas, black eyed peas, and over 3 million pounds of dry peas. Stockdale weighs 34 million pounds of watermelons and about 1100 train cars of produce go out by trucks.

State Highway Department tabulated mid-August low bids on highway projects totaling 12,540,679 dollars as part of a 24,259,167 dollar bid letting. Wilson area 10.1 miles on State 97 paving east of U S 281 to west of Cibolo Creek Bridge awarded to Mc Elwrath Bros of San Antonio for 56,447 dollars. Karnes: 11.9 miles on State 72 grading and surfacing from U S 181 to Bee County line awarded to Schwope Inc of San Antonio for 223,271 dollars.

All Milk Producers Warned Of New Law Effective September 1

Texas dairy producers face a September 1 deadline for brucellosis control plans under Grade A permits. Plan A requires slaughter of reactors within 15 days, no calfhood vaccination. Plan B allows retention of branded reactors for three years with mandatory calfhood vaccination. Enforcement lies with the State Health Department.
