Contractor Kitchens Starts Work On Highway 181 Bridge

Rex Kitchens Austin contractor has opened an office in Floresville and begun operations on Unit 1 work for the re routed 7.2 mile U S Highway 181 project from 4 5 miles north of town to 2 6 miles south of the city Scotty Clark leads the Floresville office with a crew building culverts and roadway drainage The bid for the contract totaled 106 542 with Herbert Schroeter and staff from the Highway Department overseeing the project Bids for the Pajarita Creek bridge near Wiseman farm were opened in Austin Cage Bros and L A Turner submitted the low bid at 17 842 and construction is expected to start soon

Atkinson Honored At Farewell Banquet

Claude Atkinson, a State Highway Department maintenance foreman, was honored at a farewell banquet at White House Cafe. He is transferring to Atacosa County and plans to move with his family next month to begin new duties in his former home. Speakers praised his work and friendship, and Stanley Campbell presented a keepsake on behalf of the workforce.

Wilson County Merchants Advised On Cotton Stamp Rules

L J Gappleman, regional director of the Surplus Marketing Administration, United States Department of Blue, warns merchants which articles may be sold for cotton stamps. Only items made entirely from 100 percent cotton grown, processed, and manufactured in the United States are eligible. Retailers selling noncotton articles for stamps risk a false claim against the Treasury and face fines and imprisonment.

Jaycees Clinch Softball Title In Finals Win

The Jaycees clinched the local softball league title by defeating the Fire Department 16 to 7 in the second playoff game, giving them a 2-0 series sweep after a 13-11 win on Tuesday. The series featured a new Jaycee public address system, announcing scores and providing music during lulls. A joint meeting was held in the district courtroom Monday by WPA, the State Department of Public Welfare, and the FSA. Included were Lester E. Sikes Albert D. Richardson Fred C. Elliott Mary Routh C. W A Bricken Injured In Ladder Fall In Floresville

Floresville resident W A Bricken suffered a broken left leg and broken bones in both ankles when a ladder collapsed during repair work at the Frank Donaho farmhouse near Floresville. He was taken to Oxford Hospital and remained under care for several weeks.

Enrollments Rise as Floresville School Opens New Term

About 145 high school students are registered during pre-registration with three fourths of the anticipated enrollment. Opening exercises include an invocation by Rev. J. W. Rives, remarks from Superintendent Garland, and an oath of allegiance. All teaching vacancies are filled except a grade school opening. Music position filled by Miss Mary Richardson.
