Floresville Masons prepare for a Diamond Jubilee Homecoming at the American Hall Saturday at 6 00 p m with Most Worshipful Grand Master of Texas W B Ball and Grand Chaplain E Y Beale as honored guests. Over 150 Masons are expected as past leaders including George Lopas and William Scott are remembered.
Calaveras School District was annexed to Floresville Independent School District on August 1. A tax assumption election is set for September 4, 1954, to allow maintaining the bond load and tax rate of 1.25 per hundred. Voting will occur at City Hall Fairview School House Community Building Sutherland Springs and Tackitt's Store Calaveras. Only qualified voters on Floresville or Calaveras tax rolls may vote.
The Floresville School hosts a welcome event for new faculty organized by the Parent Teacher Association. It will be held at the home of Mr and Mrs Arthur Eschienburg on South Third Street Tuesday evening August 31 from 8 to 10 P.M. The PTA invites the public to attend and meet the teachers.
Kosciusko Independent School will reopen on September 1 under the direction of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. Frank Brauner begins his duties as superintendent with Sister Mary Angelus as assistant and principal. P E Raw replaces J Luigi as director, with Arlene Monahan in charge of athletics. A new bus and updated doors and windows will aid operations as departmental work continues in the high school. Enrollment is expected to be strong with many beginners.
Market remained steady as Tuesday auction sold 880 head of cattle and hogs with cattle calves priced 15 to 16.70 and cows and calves 60 to 124 per pair. Top hogs brought 23.40, sows 16 to 20, feeders 18 to 21.70. Buyers from surrounding counties attended.
Lyndon Johnson and Price Daniel, both Texas senators, cast votes in favor of extending the measure to parity. The action reflects bipartisan support within the Texas delegation for the extension.
Local notes show Floresville received 1.17 inches of rain over the past ten days with some areas receiving a light shower while others stayed dry. Weather gauging by Julius Ewing records daily totals for a 100 day span, highlighting uneven rainfall across the county.
B F Vance appeals to farmers urging support for Judge Ralph Yarborough against Allan Shivers. He cites farm program cuts, tax relief, and agricultural concerns, urging neighbors to vote Aug 28 and to provide rides to the polls. He notes Vance's background as a former Texas farm official and farm problems author.
Large crowd expected for barbecue dinner and supper at St. Ann's Church grounds Kosciusko. Msgr P Ta Foegelle leads a day of entertainment with South Texas Play Boys performing, meals priced at 1.00 for adults and 0.50 for children under 12. events start 11:00 A.M. and 4:30 P.M.
The Picosa School will start Wednesday September first at 8:30 in the morning with Mrs. Bart Masters returning as teacher for the new school year.
Floresville and Poth stores will be closed on Monday September 6 for Labor Day. The closing dates were agreed upon by the chamber of commerce of both towns earlier this year.
Voters in Wilson County face a run off for governor with a heated contest between incumbent Allan Shivers and Ralph Yarborough. The county logged 4 500 votes in the July 24 Democratic primary with Yarborough leading Shivers by about 220 and first runoffs set for Saturday with polling from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Courthouse election returns expected Saturday night around 7:30 with officials urged to share totals.
The Wilson County Democratic Women's Club, formed earlier this year, voted on endorsing Ralph W. Yarborough for Governor. About 62 members were polled with a fraction returning cards, and roughly two thirds supported Yarborough. The club, which aims to inform members about elections and conventions, has avoided county race involvement while showing party interest.
The Floresville Peanut Festival queen Carolyn Donaho and her court are invited to appear on the Tommy Reynolds Show on KGBS TV Channel Sonday afternoon. This marks the courts first television appearance as the festival heads toward the Friday and Saturday events on September 24 and 26.
Floresville leads the Emblem of Supremacy Girls Softball showdown at La Vernia for the Winkle Memorial Award as Friday night finals conclude the event. Floresville defeated Kenedy in opening play with Dianne Frick pitching and Annabel Syringe earning high praise for Kenedy. Fall City shut out Little Flower 3 0, Karnes City defaulted over Marion, as teams vie for top honors in the three day tournament.
A San Antonio man identified as Robert F. Adams of 204 Carolina St. was killed early Wednesday about two miles north of Karnes City in a high way wreck. His wife Hortense sustained facial lacerations and their children were not injured. Incidental details are incomplete.
Notice announces a meeting of elected delegates from ASC committees in Floresville Texas to elect the County ASC Committee for 1955. The gathering is set for 9:00 A.M. on Monday August 80 1954 at the ASC office.
The Wilson County Democratic Women's Club will meet next Monday night at 7 30 at the court panel. It is the regular monthly session and all members are urged to attend.
About 32 members and wives attended a Jaycees gathering at a park near the Antonia river bridge. State President Rocky Ford spoke on past conventions, Mike Connor discussed projects, and plans for the Bi-Regional Meeting in Corpus Christi August 28-29 were urged. John Hill presided with J C Turner Bill Late and John Kissek amid a self-serve supper of bone steaks, brown beans, salad, pickles, onions, coffee, and cola.
Floresville Independent School District will start classes at 8 45 a m on September 1 using regular schedules. Buses will run the same as last year and cafeterias will serve meals. Enrollment lists show 235 pupils in high school with capacity for 250 as the 1954 55 year begins, with staff listings across elementary and high school departments.
