Texas to vote on repeal of national prohibition

In Austin Texas on August 22 voters prepare for a Saturday special election to decide whether to retain or repeal national prohibition. Senator Morris Sheppard leads the repeal side while ex Governor James Ferguson heads anti repeal. Texans also vote on constitution revision to allow 3.2 beer and a pre enabling act was passed by the Forty third legislature.

Chicken yard limits and groaning codes in a rural rant

A querulous voice complains about multiple laws on livestock and poultry limits, declaring an old hen is allowed only four eggs a week while other codes regulate property numbers yearly. The rambling text hints at frustration with legal constraints and personal beliefs.

Election Returns At Courthouse Saturday Night

Under new law the county clerk must tabulate returns and J T Houston will receive them at his office Saturday night with The Chronicle Journal aiding. Election judges are to telephone results to the clerk and unofficial tallies will be posted every two hours. Official returns under seal must be filed within twenty four hours. Local turnout concerns and Wilson county returns will be announced at intervals from the courthouse.

Poth School Opens With Large Early Enrollment

The Poth public school will open for the 1933 34 term Monday September 4 at 9 00 a m. The State Board classifies the Path school as a 9 grade institution with students taught through the ninth grade this year. The faculty includes H T Hoelscher superintendent Miss Celeste Gilley Jack Lane Miss Velma Brandes Miss Ada Craighead and Mrs Eva Maas. Board members are B W Schneider president BE J Kosarek secretary and BD J Billimek. Patrons invited to opening exercises and urged to enroll promptly for an equal start.

Peanuts Shipped From Local Territory Reach Twenty Seven Carloads

Twenty seven carloads of peanuts had been shipped from the immediate area by yesterday afternoon with twenty five cars departing from Floresville and one car from another local point.

Blacksmith Loses Finger In Drill Machine Injury

Gus Schmidt, a well known local blacksmith, lost the little finger of his left hand after his finger was caught in a drill machine Monday. The injury is very painful and he will be out of work for several days.

Texas Highway Commission approves a $6,998,782 general maintenance appropriation for the new fiscal year starting September 1, the smallest ever for maintenance. J B Early notes the figure may cover only routine upkeep unless construction is funded from maintenance. Floresville Public School will open Monday at 9 A M with Superintendent Conn appealing to district patrons to rally behind the school and cooperate in every possible manner. New students will receive a welcome as heavy enrollment is expected during opening week.

Connally seeks increased Texas public works funding

U S Senator Tom Connally urged President Roosevelt to boost public works allocations for military construction rivers and harbors and public buildings. He named air field improvements at San Antonio housing at Fort Sam Houston and inclusion of Federal buildings at San Antonio and Waco in the program. He said he felt the White House showed a sympathetic attitude toward these proposals.

Floresville Citizens Meet Vice President Garner In Uvalde

Floresville residents Mrs. John H. Mayes Mrs. E. D. Mayes and Douglas Fitzgerald with Mrs. W. C. Gorham of near Stockdale traveled to Brackettville then to Uvalde to meet Vice President Garner. They encountered him at a station where he greeted them warmly and spoke of Wilson county ties.
