Five year old Carter Allen Ray of Fairview will serve as Trainbearer to Miss Sarah Hughes Queen Elect of the Court of Victorian Grace and Elegance. He is the son of Tom and Pam Ray and grandson of W Curtis Ray and the late Joan Lee Smith Ray, with maternal grandparents Tom and Jan Graid of San Antonio. Carter attends kindergarten, has siblings Kelsey and Mason, and attends First Presbyterian Church in San Antonio. He enjoys John Deere toys and helping on the family dairy farm established in 1899, with family history in past Peanut Festivals and Royal Courts. He appreciates Miss Hughes for selecting him as Trainbearer and as a Children's Court member.

Four sites chosen for Texas veterans nursing homes
The Texas Veterans Land Board selected Bonham Big Spring Floresville and Temple for four 150 bed veterans nursing homes. Construction cost about 10 to 12 million per site with two facilities to open by fall 1998 and the rest by fall 1999. The federal government will cover about 65 percent of the cost.

Floresville votes against $2.1 million golf course plan
In Floresville last Saturday voters rejected a proposed 2.1 million municipal golf course and recreational complex by 498 to 475. The defeat ends plans to issue certificates of obligation for land purchase and construction near River City Park on Hwy 97 West and wipes out a 500000 grant from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Opponents had petitioned for a referendum after council previously voted 4 to 1 to publish notice of intent.
