Cancer Crusade Tonight in Wilson County
Mrs. John H. Mayes Jr. is Wilson County Crusade Chairman for the American Cancer Society 1970 71. The drive occurs August 19 20 in Floresville with follow ups the next week. About 300 local volunteers will go house to house seeking donations for cancer research. Area Captains include Mrs Elmer Risley Mrs Leon Johnson Mrs John Hill and Mrs Carl Eschenburg. Support includes reorganizing cabinet departments within Agriculture, county zoning outside city limits, reducing ad valorem taxes for the Foundation School Program, vaccine efforts for African Swine Fever, expanded tech training in schools, and regional councils of governments. Opposed items include early election result releases, welfare for strikers, banning pesticides, school bussing for racial balance, and daylight saving time. Floresville Man Beaten. Suspects Sought in Home Invasion
Floresville resident Jesse Popham, 73, was severely beaten when three masked men forcibly entered his home late Friday. He was hospitalized in San Antonio in critical condition, later reported improved. Popham is deaf mute and sustained a fractured skull with extensive head injuries. over 100 stitches were said to be required. Texas Rangers assist in the case. one assailant reportedly carried a pistol and over $200 was taken.
