Floresville announces the opening of its schools for Friday September 9 with a half day. Bus routes are listed for September 9 and full day classes begin September 12 with cafeteria service. New pupils must register September 1-2. new students need transcripts and vaccination certificates.
Floresville VFW Post No. 7471 and Ladies Auxiliary plan a Labor Day chicken barbecue to mark the opening of the VFW rifle range on the Stevens place eight miles north of town on the old Sutherland Springs Road. A rifle shooting contest will award a prize rifle. two teams will be formed for future competitions.
TheFloresville Tigers gymnasium nears completion as the opening of school approaches. Woodwork, wiring, and plumbing near finish. Savings under fixed fee add two adult restrooms a custodian’s room and a waiting area with trophy shelves and water fountain to the plan.
Mrs Clyde Fahrenthold wife of Mayor Fahrenthold of Poth is improving at Baptist Memorial Hospital in San Antonio after the birth of their son Jerry Patrick on July 28 The baby weighed 4 pounds 8 ounces and is thriving Her condition had been critical for two weeks but showed improvement Wednesday afternoon though she remains ill and will stay several days.
Oil news from Atascosa Refugio and surrounding counties notes a well in Shuman field at 3,828 to 3,882 feet pumped 80.14 barrels from an open hole. La Gloria Corp No 1 Emil Beck in Refugio County, about four miles southeast of Woodaboro, drilling at 6,827 feet with an electrical log planned at 6,570 feet, contract depth around 6,300 feet. Hewit and No J-1aa near Raeoo remains active with depths mentioned.
Floresville Band and director Frits Teltechik receive an invitation to march in the Boerne Centennial Parade. The Floresville School Band earns regional honors and readiness for a celebratory civic event.
The Hermann Sons Lodges of Poth announce their annual barbecue and picnic at the hall on August 21.Entertainment begins at 2 P.M. and continues into the night.Supper starts at 4:30 P.M. and features barbecued meat and country sausage.Plates cost 1.00 for adults and 0.50 for children.A big night dance with Tommy Hill and His Hillbillies caps the event.Everyone is invited to enjoy barbecue, supper, and a good time with friends and neighbors.
The Floresville local Southern Pacific station reports farm product shipments to Wednesday noon. Joe Donaho loaded 2 carloads of corn while E A Fliehler shipped 6 carloads of blackeyed peas. About 20 carloads of small grain had been shipped and the season nearly over. Nine carloads of peanuts had been shipped by three buyers as the peanut crop just began moving.
Poth shipped its first car of shelled corn on Wednesday, bought by Malcher and Voges local buyers. The company also reports shipping 68 car loads of small grain this season.
The 1949 peanut season starts as favorable weather aids rapid movement in Floresville. The first carload, weighing 47 420 pounds, shipped August 6 to Dublin by Cy Huxford, with growers Free man Foster Busselmann and Savas Hernandez among early producers. Prices ranged from 2.62 to 3.19 per bushel, sexes and yields noted for several growers as inspectors from the U S Department of Agriculture arrive to monitor shipments.
SUTHERLAND SPRINGS August 17 Plans for use of the newly acquired community center and improvements for the building will be discussed at a meeting Thursday night. The Civic Club of Sutherland Springs will sponsor the meeting and a barbecue supper. The location is 80 miles south.
Descendants of the late FE P Wallace gathered at the Max Starcke Park Seguin on Sunday August 14 1949 for a joyful reunion. Attendees from various towns enjoyed an old fashioned basket dinner under trees and a day of swimming boating and visiting. Surviving family members present included 8 sons and 4 daughters with many relatives from Corpus Christi Floresville Seguin Luling and San Antonio.
American Legion Post No. 639 of St. Hedwig announces a picnic barbecue next Sunday August 21 with barbecue home made country sausage and trimmings. Dinner starts at 12 and supper follows with entertainment and refreshments throughout the afternoon. Alex and His Old Time Band plays later.
Voters in Floresville will decide next Tuesday on a 600000 revenue bond refinance for the Floresville Electric Light and Power System. Proponents stress no tax increase. funds will enable expansions, retire debt, and build reserves for future improvements across Floresville Path Stockdale and rural Wilson County. The election at City Hall opens 9 AM and closes 4 PM.
