Final tally confirms more than one million votes cast in the July primary. James V. Allred leads Tom Hunter by 55 657 votes. Senator Tom Connally defeats Joe Bailey by 213 176 votes. No runoff for agricultural commissioner as counties delay tabulation.
Eastland returns fixed majorities for renominated Texas officials and final statewide tallies show Connally as U S Senator with 567139 votes and McDonald leading for Governor with 207200. Pluralities include Woodall for Lieutenant Governor 341424 and Lockhart for State Treasurer 485796. Fisher and others posted lower totals amid race changes. An 81 pound seven foot alligator was killed by Frank Riley and J L Mills at Buzzard's Bluff after it fed on a catfish they had set aside.
Washington dispatch reports 1 4 million dollars allotted to Texas to aid drought relief and cattle handling operations. The notice notes federal assistance aimed at supporting ranchers facing drought conditions and cattle care challenges in Texas.
Wilson County Post No. 38 at Floresville met August 7 electing officers for the year and choosing delegates to the Mineral Wells state convention on August 26 27 and 28. Elected officers include Lieberman Wright Pickett Schultz Seale Beck Carter Woolsey Barnes de la Zerda and others. Delegates named include Lieberman Warren Schultz Eschenburg Murray Franklin.
Local supporters of State Senator Walter Woodward of Coleman announce a prominent San Antonio speaker will address Woodward’s candidacy for Attorney General next Tuesday night August 21 at 8 15 in the courthouse. A large crowd is expected and ladies receive special invitations. Judge J H Baker of San Saba spoke at the last minute. All voters urged to attend and hear the race discussed.
William McGraw speaks Wednesday night as candidate for attorney general addressing a fair sized crowd at the courthouse. He outlines his platform and pledges reform and law enforcement emphasis.
William McCraw of Deri 8 campaigned for attorney general in Wilson County Court House district courtroom. He highlighted his record as Dallas County district attorney and endorsements from 300 lawyers and a Dallas judge, portraying himself as the people’s lawyer and pledging fair, impartial service.
A Wednesday afternoon meeting of about 30 onion growers at the Floresville courthouse discussed past marketing and future plans. State Agriculture reps urged caution, advising not to sign contracts without full understanding and to mail documents for review to the department. Attendees included L. B H Pratt acting chief clerk, Hart T Longson supervisor, and Marvin G Longino of Market News in San Antonio.
The Marcelona Baptist Church holds an outdoor revival through Aug 26 with daily services at 8:15 p.m. This week and next week offer morning and evening sessions at 11 a.m. and 8:15 p.m. Pastor Brother Dick Rice leads, assisted by Brother Don O Covington from Kenedy who studied at Marcelona 27 years ago.
DeWitt Murray serves as chairman and Fitzgerald as secretary as delegates to the state convention are chosen.
After canvassing pre election returns, the County Democratic Executive Committee held an informal convention naming Dewitt Murray as chair and S. S. Fitzgerald as secretary. Delegates to the State Convention were chosen from a long list including DeWitt Murray, H. C. Stroud, Mrs. H. C. Stroud, F. T. Magee, Otto Schraub, and many others. No resolutions or endorsements were offered or given.
The American Legion Auxiliary elected officers for the coming year at a meeting on August 3. Sewell Schultz was named president with A C Eschenburg as first vice president and S J Irwin as second vice president. Lallah Warren became secretary, Hattie Barnes treasurer, John Pickett reporter and social secretary, Emma Anderson historian. Installations set for October. Delegates named for state meeting August 25 to 27: Ida Mae Murray, Schultz, Warren. Alternates: Pickett and Warren. Quilts planned from donated scraps. relief sewing room to assemble them. Ice cream served at the White House.
Fort Worth Texas Aug 13 Tom F Hunter gubernatorial candidate said Friday night he would close the bookies' careers and aimed to expose distorted truths in his platform, pledging to make himself clear on horse racing and gambling policies.
Oil activity spreads in Poth territory with J Yancy of Ft Worth drilling on Jerome Lussy place seven miles east of Poth using a large rotary rig. A derrick nears completion on Jim McDaniel ranch as the company plans early drilling. Community hopes for real test wells after continued activity nearby.
Miss Elizabeth Baldwin of Sabinal, sister of Miss Mary Frances Baldwin and a Floresville High School teacher, died at Santa Rosa Infirmary in San Antonio at 4:30 Thursday morning after a brief illness. Funeral services were held at Porter Loring's parlors in San Antonio, with interment at Sabinas.
Hon. C. S. Slatton of San Antonio will address Wilson county voters at the Floresville courthouse at 10:00 a.m. in support of James V. Allred for governor. Slatton tours Southwest Texas, delivering up to three speeches daily. Commissioners lower Wilson County tax rate from 86 to 82 cents for the coming year, citing drought, wind damage, and county finances. New relief board members appointed, and highway widening and fund transfers approved.
The Floresville Cemetery Association held its regular meeting at Mrs. O D Rhode's home on August 10, 1934. In Corsicana on Friday night James V. Allred, attorney general and gubernatorial candidate, accused opponent Tom Hunter of pushing a blended tax he called a sales tax that would burden the masses while professing to aid the people. He claimed the plan would impose more tax than promised and would slash exemptions.
