Wilson County Conservation Association issued the first parity payments last Friday August 9 with 60 checks, followed by 70 more. The AAA program total to about $50,000 aiding farmers and landowners in a county hit by drought, credited to Mr. Moss and staff for early returns this year versus last October.
The Commodity Credit Corporation set loan rates from 9.16 to 9.9 cents per pound for an expected 11,428,000 bales of cotton. President Roosevelt approved Secretary Wallace’s recommendation of a $15 million non mandatory program for the 1940 crop and signed a bill raising the Corporation’s resources to 1.4 billion dollars to support mandatory loan provisions under the Agricultural Adjustment Act.
Richard Moore is named Assistant Rural Supervisor under F. W. Roe der with the BSA and FSA, succeeding A. W. Cole who transfers to a new office in Linton. Moore, a Texas A&M graduate, arrives with his grandmother Mrs. Gregory, and they reside at the Gorham cottage apartment.
A listing of Peanut Festival committees includes J. T. Sheehy as chairman of the main committee with assistants H. V. Warren Jimmie Russell and C. C. Collins plus Bob Stevens. Other chairs cover Home Demonstration Clubs booth 4-H Palm Exhibits Finance Publicity Rodeo Entertainment Carnival and more with multiple co chairs and members named.
Leah Mae Zunker of the Ehlers' 4-H Club was awarded a Gold Star pin at the Wilson county girls 4-H encampment held in Sutherland Springs. Her demonstration highlighted 1939 work and achievements.
The past week of Local Softball League play included mixed results with Gulf Clippers, Red Horses, Magnolias, Hornets, and Owls competing. Key matchups featured Gulf Clippers defeating Red Horses, Magnolias beating Red Horses, and Hornets and Stalla with Popham noted on batteries amid a range of scores and series highlights. Games are scheduled for Tuesday August 20 and Thursday August 22 with several team matchups set across the league.
Homecoming services scheduled at Le Vernia Baptist Church on Sunday August 18 at 11:00 a m and 3:30 p m. Former members urged to attend. A luncheon will follow.
Thomas Isaac Grier, age about 79, died at his residence in Poth. Funeral rites were held Tuesday at 5:30 pm at the residence, burial in the Sacred Sacrament Cemetery. One of Wilson County’s oldest settlers, he moved from Bexar County as a child in 1865 and spent his life as a stockman and farmer. He was born October 20, 1859 in San Antonio to Robert F. and Refugio L. Grier. He married Frances Krall in 1881, who died in 1906, and Josephine Castro in 1909, with seven and four children from the two marriages respectively. He was respected for his straightforward, law-abiding life.
Thomas I Grier reports A W Cole former Assistant Rural Supervisor of the Farm Security Administration has been reassigned to Sinton and promoted to Rural Supervisor serving San Patricio and Aransas counties. Cole, ex Hillsboro recruit and Texas Tech graduate, and his wife depart Floresville for their new home. Miss Aldah Mae Short from Beeville also moves to the new Linton office as clerk-typist.
Walter Nelson No 1 Platner wildcat in Wilson County was shut down at 1 770 feet for water. The item appears in Thursday's San Antonio Express.
In Floresville last Saturday afternoon, rival senatorial candidates spoke to a fair sized crowd on the courthouse square using loudspeakers. They addressed issues including old age pensions, the sales tax, and repealing the truck load limit. Senator Roberts, seeking a second term, urged adherence to the Democratic tradition of re‑electing incumbents, while Mauritz, former representative and current state executive committee member, is in his first bid for the senate. In the first primary Roberts led, with Joe Caldwell of Rockport third in the three‑way race.
A softball double header at Tiger Field is set for Monday night August 19 with first pitch at 8 p.m. Lieberman’s Lassies face Chick Inn Girls from Path in the opener, followed by Southern Select versus Magnolias. Admission is 10 cents for both games. players in the two games may gain free admission if eligible.
John E. Mutz 58, a respected Pulaski area farmer, died at his home Monday morning after a period of ill health. Religious services were held at Cestahowa Catholic Church with burial in Cestahowa Cemetery. Survived by his widow and three daughters, Mrs Louis Kollodziej of Poth, Mrs John Pollak, and Miss Magdisiens Mutz of Pulaski.
J E McDonald, state agriculture commissioner and sixth-term nominee, addressed Beaumont Republicans after a visit with Wendell Willkie at a Colorado resort. A telegram from Floresville farm leaders Aug 12 endorses Roosevelt, praising his aid to agriculture and farmer prosperity.
SAN MARCOS August 15 Miss Rosa Saner a Geronimo consolidated school teacher and Southwest Texas State Teachers College student earned an unusual record by never missing a day in thirty four years of teaching. She began at Midway near La Vernia after graduating from Southwest Texas Normal and traveled three miles over muddy prairies to attend classes. Over the years she also taught at Clear Spring and Leisner and for twenty eight years at Geronimo.
Mr and Mrs Fred W Roeder departed Wednesday for a two week motor vacation to Denver Colorado. Roeder serves as Rural Supervisor for here.
A. O. Reedy, U S Department of Agriculture quarantine inspector, and assistants H. Cockrell and Leroy Belzing conducted tests of trash from cotton ginned at H L Gin Company in Floresville and nearby communities. No evidence of pink bollworm was found, weather conditions cited, with plans to remain through the week before potential transfer to Louisiana.
San Antonio Evening News reports a motorist sought by the state highway patrol for an offense at Floresville was arrested Friday night in the 100 block of South New Braunfels Avenue by Patrolman J W Reardon. Officers said the man was wanted on a charge of throwing a stone through a car windshield and striking the driver.
Mary Routh reports that farm women at Wilson county cotton mattress centers have produced more than 220 mattresses under the Make or Buy a Cotton Mattress program. A third shipment has arrived for distribution, with centers to reopen as more cotton arrives. Each mattress uses lint cotton fifty pounds plus five pounds ticking. The project aims to finish 1,126 mattresses in the county, with labor increasing after harvest.
